Rattling transfercase shifter, any suggestions?

First of all, thanks to all who make this site happen. Ive already had a million ?'s answered without even asking. I just got my first diesel, its a 1993 xtra cab 250 4x4 5 speed, its was hard to find but it all came together and under $5000 from the original owner, anyways, its really nothing but over the long haul its like chinese water torture with the slight buzz/rattle from the transfercase stick, i can put my hand on it and it quits, i cleaned the linkage up but it still makes noise, any suggestions?

I don't know exactly what causes it, but you are not alone, mine does ingthe same thing . I think it has something to do with the slots it moves in. Good idea for a post I too would love to know what is going on and figure out how to stop it. Good luck, and if you find out before me let me know.

Mine did that but what happened to mine was the little diagram on the top of the stick was broken and it was rattling inside where it sat. So I took some clear silicon and squirted some in where the piece sits and then put the little piece back and hasn't rattled since.

Good Luck
Ben

first off there is a big bolt that holds the shifter(the shifter pivit) and there is a sleave in there that could need to be replaced!

I rebuilt my 205 and found a bad bearing and a scared shaft!
smoothed the shaft down(front drive part of the t-case)and replace all the bearings with proper shims and the noise when away!
this pic is out of G1625S gallory or pic's and is what i think is the cause of the shifter rattle!
You would real have to have had one of the 205 t-case apart to under stand the reasing for this sleeve making the rattle.

or some one better at explaining this stuff then me

EDIT sorry forgot the link!

I might try wrapping the shifter with duct tape where it rides in the slot and see if it does anything. Maby it will dampen it a little. (Clear duct tape is my favorite lately) If that doesnt work i might have to listen to my pops words about, "If it aint broke, dont fix it."

A good fix for this cuortesy of Wannadiesel..........
Cut a length of 1/2 inch garden hose about an inch longer than the shift linkage located to the passenger side of the transfer case, slit it and secure it around the linkage with zip-ties or tape or whatever suits you.
It stiff and long enough to prevent the rattle, and still allows for movement to shift in and out of 4WD......or do what a lot of guys do and keep a roll of duct tape dropped over the shift handle......

The source of the rattle is almost always in the drivelines. The factory drivelines are very sloppy. Replacing the drivelines fixes the shifter rattle every time. It will still rattle a little, and the other cures listed above will help with that, but I just keep and old welding glove on mine and that does the trick.

There is a plastic bushing in the shift linkage assy that wears and results in teh linkage having enough "slop" to rattle around. You can replace this bushing for around 20$ or live with the rattle. I refused to pay my local dealers parts dept. that much for a 10 cent piece of plastic, and just turn up the radio when the rattle gets annoying....
