Strange noise

This afternoon to help the truck cool down quickly I lowered the rear windows some to help vent the hot air. I was driving about 45 and there was a loud rumble/popping noise that was so loud it was almost painful. The noise is there with one window lowered but increases with both partially lowered. It reaches a peak when the windows are lowered about 6 or 8 inches and then decreases as the windows are lowered more. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

I do have a sliding rear window and don't know if that has anything to do with the noise or not. The air pressure is causing something to vibrate but I was not able to determine what.

Mine does the same thing. I just lower my front windows a crack and it goes away. It must just be an air pressure thing, I had a Ford Tarus commuter car that did the same thing.

Its a kind of wind turbulence that only happens when the rears are rolled down
in a certain position.

Sure does hurt the ears don't it?

The Owner's Manual says to not have a back window rolled down without a front one partially open.

I noticed the same thing the night we bought the truck. Took the family for a ride and my daughter rolled just her right rear window all the way down. We had a 16 mph cross wind coming right in her window. All of a sudden it fell like my ears were going to explode. My wife and I open ours a little and it went away.

This phenomenon you are experiencing is called buffeting. This is why the owner's manuals for most vehicles tell you not to roll the back windows down without the front windows down. The noise you are hearing is just the excess pressure building up. Like others mentioned, just crack the front windows a bit.

If you have the sliding rear window, opening it will allow the air pressure to escape and eliminate the buffeting sound.

I know the noise is annoying it sounds like you have a helicopter in the back seat.
