From SRW to DRW. Good choice or not?

The truck in my sig is what I currently drive. I'm looking to either go to 06-07 megacab drw or 06-07 non-mega drw. I don't need the additional towing capacity, more of a want than a need. I don't do much off-roading but it would be my truck to get me to hunting spots. I've heard negative things about the drw when road conditions get tough. Talk me into or out of it. The truck in my sig is for sale, by the way. Thanks

LOVE my drw. I have had a couple of them (look at my pics) I have also had and still have srw trucks. I can't imagine not having my dually. I tow alot and heavy so for that the drw is unmatched. Day to day I don't have any trouble except for going into the cities then it can be a real pain. Then again any truck can be a pain in NYC. The drw also handles the twisties way better as well. The one thing that really sucks is when you buy tires. It's about $600 extra for me. To me it's that only way to go.

I've had both. If the roads were not so narrow and twisty where I live I would have a DRW right now. You have to keep an eye on the rear tire pressure. I ran a while with one flat once empty and did not know it.

more expensive to change tires on DRW....

If you don't NEED a dually then don't bother. My truck tends to fishtail a lot when offroad and the duallies are a pain in the city. Center tread of the tires is worn out as I don't adjust the pressures like I should cause its a pain. Plus I have to replace 6 at a time.

The only time I enjoy the DRW is when the 30ft gooseneck is hooked up which is only about 4-6 times a year. I honestly would be better off with a SRW.

I had an 03 SRW 3500 and 30' toyhauler 5th wheel. I got my 06 dually because I was looking at getting a much larger 5th wheel.

I felt the SRW towed the 30' one fine (and it did) but before I got the big 5th wheel I towed the 30' one with the dually.

What a difference. Though the SRW handled it fine, I found myself arriving at the camp spot much less fatigued. Twisty, narrow and uneven mountain roads are just much more relaxing to tow with the dually.

I don't have a problem with it around town (you get used to it quickly).

Brushed over narrow unimproved forest roads can be a pain, and new tires are more expensive, but as long as I have a 5th wheel I will now always have a dually.

It tows the 40' 5th wheel I have now great, too.

Like he said.

I considered a dually before I got my SRW. I've always loved the look, but when I really started to think about it, I realized that I really didn't need it. My boss has a dually (4x4) and it is about helpless in the snow and mud unless there is weight on it. Granted, that is with road/highway tread tires, but that what makes sense for the driving he does. If you are buying a dually you probably want maximum tow capacity and stability with heavy trailers. If this only applies to you once every few months for not that many miles, an SRW will be fine.
On a side note, I was in a city parking garage the other day with my truck, and it was a tight fit. I can't imagine a dually in there.

I've had both, I do tow, and tow heavy, the SRW does the job just fine. I considered getting a dually when I bought the 2006. If I really needed one I'd have one OR put a dually kit under the 2006, but I have yet to see where I need duals.

They ARE a PITA in town, small places and parking garages were designed for roller skates and small 'green' vehicles.

I'm still fighting this. I may end up keeping the 03 I have for a while. What do you think my truck is worth with 102k miles and everything in my sig. Thanks

2wd or 4wd? If I were you I'd do some searching on ebay on the "Completed Sales" searches and see what folks are actually paying for them. I think you are probably going to be looking at around $14-16K, depending on my first question and condition. From my experience, all your add-on accessories won't make any difference in the price, unless someone is specifically looking for them. I'm guessing at the price from when I was searching for a truck a couple months ago. Spent a couple weeks searching everything for a '00 to '06 SRW 2500. Ended up finding the truck in my sig at a dealer within a day's drive, at about the same price as an 05 SRW, so I bought the 3500. I don't need the DRW now, but I'm planning on getting a 5th wheel next year. My Dad hauls his with a '01 2500 and told me he wishes he had a 3500 DRW.

I have been contemplating the SRW / DRW delima for a wile now. I tow probably more miles a year then I drive but only about 4 months of the year do I tow. It also happens to be winter months. I am pulling a 40' G'neck enclosed race trailer from Detroit area all over Michigan and to Wisconsin and Minnesota several times, which is why I want the Dually. BUT I really like to look when I ran 315's on it in the summer. I think I want to convert to DRW if I can find someone to swap.

If it is super clean, 4 x 4 and loaded up (PW PL Power Seat, typical SLT and Laramie options) then you are at $16k+ ALL DAY.

Well, first of all I was offered $18k for the truck this week and I declined. Secondly, I'm back on the trail and I think I'm going to pursue an early 07 5.9 3500 quad cab, long box, 6 spd and end up with a flatbed on it. There are so many times the flatbed would be nice on the farm on a daily basis. I'm picky as hell as you can see and it will take some time, but they are out there. When I bought the truck in my sig, it was my absolute dream truck and a dream its been, but I'm moving on. I think the truck I'm after with 5" exhaust, gauges, smarty and 35's would be a real nice looking truck. I know some folks hate the flatbed idea, but form follows function. Thanks for the thoughts.

I agree, with the flat deck opion. Darn handy. I almost wonder if a manufature sold a truck(1/2,3/4 or 1 ton) with an optional flat bed how popular of a n option it would be. Lots of people put quad decks on thats like a flat deck on top of the bow and when I had a slide in camper I always used to think about all the lost space there was in the wheel wells...

I visited with Bradford built this morning. SRW work bed is around $1800, SRW utility bed around $3300. $400 or so to remove old bed and install new. Includes wiring of bed. SRW bed is 84" wide vs the DRW bed at 96". If I went this route, I would try to sell the bed to make up some of the difference in cost of the new bed.
