separating fogs from headlights

Has anyone rewired their fog lights so that they can be used with or without the headlights and when the headlights are on hi beam. I would like to do this as a extra safety measure in case headlights go out or to use in really heavy fog without the glare of the headlights like I was in the other night.

You can turn on just your parking lights (First click) and run your fog lights, at least mine does. As far as fogs with brights, check Geno's Garage. I believe it's Bright Box that does was you're asking for.

I missed that you're in Canada.

What about aiming your HL's a little lower?

Just wire in a new circuit, like you would if installing after market lights.

Sounds like what you are actually wanting to do is to disable your daytime running lights, so you can run your fog lights without them?

But won't that cause problems with the TIPM?

Don't know if that can be done on these newer trucks with the TIPM. I did it on my 98 and wish I still had it instead of this modern computerized ****. Still say computers belong in the home and not in the vehicle.

The TIPM will think the lights are off.

so could I use the oem switch and run to a relay to power the lights with it if I unhooked the out wire before the TPIM or should I just install a new switch?

I would sure give it a try with the OEM switch for a clean factory look. It should work to do it the way you mention, although I haven't looked at the circuit.

Also, I believe you can command the DRL off with the factory scan tool, and I've heard some of the programmers can do it.

Thanks for the reply. I will ask the service manager at the dealership when I am in there next week about turning off the DRL as I do not really like the idea of my HIDs coming on and off so many times a day while driving in the city. Can't be good for the longevity of the bulbs and ballasts.

If you simply use a factory wire and switch to operate a relay, then it act just like a factory light. You need to bypass the factory wiring altogether. Not difficult, really.

You could wire them up as a completly independant circuit, and have a trigger wire running off of your head light or running light to the relay. Whenever the lights are on, the fogs will be on.

I would suggest that you have a switch somewhere so you can turn them off if needed.
