"Scheduled Maintenance" Do it Yourself or Dealer
When i picked up my truck, the dealer told me to make sure i recored the "Schedule Maintenance" like changing the oil and filter if i do it myself and the other stuff that i do my self at the recommended times.
He said i could do it (change oil...ect) myself just make sure i recored it in the Maintenance logbook. He told me if i had to bring it in for warranty work and the maintenance logbook was not filled out proper then my warranty could be void.

A note in the inside cover of the maintenance logbook states:

"Your new vehicle limited warranty requires that you preform the scheduled maintenance at the times or mileage's
shown in your Owner's Manual. If you do not do so, and your vehicle fails as a result of your failure to maintain your vehicle properly, repairs of the failure may not be covered under your warranty. DaimlerChrysler recommends that you use this logbook to keep a written recored of maintenance performed on your vehicle for up to 100,000 miles, either by routinely having your dealership or other qualified technician record the severice performed in your maintenance logbook , or by keeping receipts or other documentation of work you've had done on your vehicle in your maintenance logbook."
Now, i want to do all i can my self always have on my other vehicle's.
What do those with new or bought new(earlyer models) do in this case?
Do i need a lawyer
:'(
to clearify this for me or is it a given that as long as the logbook is up to date as for a mileage goes i am ok .
hope i don't have to use the warranty work anyway

Thanks

Re:"Scheduled Maintenance" Do it Yourself or Dealer
I agree, do the maintenance yourself. Keep a record of what you do, the date, receipts for what you buy such as oil, filters, grease, etc. Failure to maintain one part does not void your warrantee on another part. For instance, failure to rotate tires does not void the engine warrantee.

You can use computer software to track your maintenance or you can keep a paper log. Just be sure that you indicate the items as per your maintenance schedule. I also check off each item in the maintenance book that came with the vehicle, date it and sign it. I keep this in my truck. Hope that helps.

No big deal, just good record keeping.

Casey
Re:"Scheduled Maintenance" Do it Yourself or Dealer
I believe you are fine doing the work yourself. As was said before keep receipts for filters, oils (and disposal fees if you have them) Worked many years on vehicles, technicians know when they have been abused and when they have been maintained. Worst abuse is auto trans. Keep your receipts for that one for sure. If you do your own work you will get familiar with the truck and you will spot items that are wearing or going to break before they do, saving you time and money. Please don't get a lawyer involved

I let the Dealers do all the oil changes. I purchased a oil change policy from the dealer. 28 oil changes $170.00.. Thats about $6 a oil change.. I live for convience, plus i alway make sure the dealer did the oil change.

I do it myself. I dont trust anyone with my 30,000 plus thousand dollar truck. I have heard many horror stories, such as them changing the oil and not the filter or not using the right kind of oil.

Do it yourself, do it right. You will sleep better at night knowing it is done right.
Re:"Scheduled Maintenance" Do it Yourself or Dealer
When I bought mine, I went to there little 5 minute seminare and got 8 free oil changes. What the heck, they charge 60.00 to change the filter and oil, 8 free, you bet. And it's under warentty, after that I will do the rest. You got to milk these dealers for everything! ;D

Well I would think if any of you had worked in a dealership you might think twice about having your oil changed there. Ususally the low man does oil and filter all day. If you ask for the diesel tech to do it then you will be fine. Rebuilt one too many engines because the oil changer forgot the drain plug etc. Also they are not able (read trained enuff) to pick up problems with the truck or car. They only know how to change oil and sell air filters. Of course exceptions to every rule. This is why I do my own. It is not a cost or convenience thing to me. If 50 bucks 3 or 4 times a year is gonna break me I am in more trouble than just oil changes. And I dislike doing them.....
Re:"Scheduled Maintenance" Do it Yourself or Dealer
You must keep a "lazy eye" fixed on the dealer's tech staff. I just had them switch out the differential fluid to synthetic. Seems pretty simple eh. You would think.

The rear started growling immediately when turning sharply. Do you think the dealer would forget to put the anti-slip additive in? You've got it. I couldn't believe it.

I made out ok however. Got them to do the whole job for $0.00. Installed a Mag Hytec cap to boot w/extra capacity. Now how did I do that?

First - Make sure you have a good relationship with your service advisor. I only deal with one person who I've found has a great personality and is genuinely after the owner's beat interest.

Second - I pitched a fit when I found out the truck didn't have synthetic diff fluid in it already from the factory. Why sell me a truck that I'm buying for towing and Dodge says I can't tow with until I change the rear to synthetic. Is this crazy or what? Cost cutting doo doo I'm sure.

Well my logic must have worked. My service advisor said she didn't understand it either and filled out the service ticket like I had a leak or something and got the service done under warranty. Superb customer service! Well from my service rep anyway ... keep an eye on any service work that's done. All shop techs are not the same.

Ask questions. Another example is I wanted the Mopar mud flaps installed when I had my tires rotated the first time. My service rep said that the "book" said that the front flaps would not fit on my truck because I have nerf bars installed. This really didn't seem right as the bars stop 4"-5" before the wheel well. I bet my service advisor $1.00 that they would fit. Quess what? I won my $1.00.

Don't take anything for granted when it comes to the service of you vehicle. Think, ask questions and develop a good rapport with your service advisor.

After my rear synthetic change over I sent my service advisor a "Thank You" card, telling her how much I appreciated her professionalism and customer care (in other words - kissing up). You can bet that something as simple as this will go a long way in developing a strong relationship.
Re:"Scheduled Maintenance" Do it Yourself or Dealer
Gotta remember if you get a good tech you can send him a thank you case of beer also. The white coats (service writers) are the main line to the customer they get all the sh*t when something goes wrong, and usually the praise when the customer is happy. Worst thing about the auto trade is flat rate. Makes thieves outa some good techs. Lines the owners pockets big time. Techs cut corners to get more hours in to get more pay. You play the odds if some come back you fix em for free but in the long run u make more money. Front end guys make 100k easy a year. They don't give a rats a*s about the customer in most instances. Been there done that. Warranty is scammed big time also. Operations are written down and sometimes the car doesn't even get in the door. I wish you luck...
