I noticed quarter-size rust spots recently on a friend's '04 (220k miles). I thought the big 3 had learned a lesson or two from the '70s

Only way I've heard of fixing rust reliably is to grind it down to the bare metal, weld a new piece in if it's too far gone, and re-paint. Otherwise you can try touch-up paint but that will only get you so far. Hopefully somebody on here has a better plan for you.

I had same thing, I took it to a place that cut a part out of my wheel well and welded in a whole new peice of metal so it wouldnt come back. Looks just like a new fender you could never tell part of it is new metal

mine ended up being about 700, kinda expensive but i made sure i did it the right way the first time so it wouldnt come back, its also cheaper than paying to grind it off then having to come back and fix it again when it returns. It cover the all labor parts and repainting the whole fender If you ask me doing it right is priceless.
Also where in illinois are you from since im also in illinois?

im farther south. but mine was not a whole side it was a peice of metal they cut out of the fender, (about the size of 2 diner plates) then they would order the replace ment peice and weld it in.... paint it then good as new

For $700 I would probably just upgrade to a flat-bed (and maybe a cow dog to ride on the back too).

not sure when you purchased but I believe that there is a 7 year warranty on that. I had both sides of my truck replaced once was within warranty and the otherside was out of warranty about 5 months but replaced with a $50 deductible.
