PLEASE HELP! Nitto Terra Grapplers vs BF Goodrich AT's

Hey guys,

So I just bought a 2005 Ram 2500 w/ about 97k on the clock. The current tires are getting pretty old and am looking to buy a new set...

My question is what should I get...the Nitto Terra Grapplers or the BF Goodrich AT's? I like the bigger tire look so should I go with the stock 265's or go up to the 285's??

I drive a lot of city/highway miles and also pull a 20' boat in the summer and dirt roads out at the campground.

I'm running on the Terra Grapplers right now and they are very nice both on and off road. My coworker has basically the same truck on the BFGs and he also likes them but can't comment on off road stuff, he just got them for the looks. I would say get whichever one you can find cheaper or if they're the same price get whichever one you like the look of better.

I would definitely get the 285s, they make the truck look much much better than the stock size.

285-75-17s on my truck with the Nittos. Love them. Quiet and good grip in the snow. Can't really comment on the BFGs but I thought they were more expensive then the Nittos???

285s

My 285 TGs do fine in the city. I also went with a load range E tire. However lots of folks use D rated without issue.

I have BFG AT/KOs on mine. stock size e-rated... Have about 25k miles on them and they are great..

Have always had good luck with BFG ATs... which is odd considering what a pile of crap the BFG rugged trail TA's that come on the truck are....

I loved my AT's on several vehicles, and they were great in the snow on my truck, but I bought the 305's which are way too wide for the 7" rim and they were squishy and soft, even when aired to 90 lbs.

I had the BFG's and they wore quick for me. The truck wandered alot with them also. I recently switched to the Nitto TG's and the truck drives much better now. I cant comment on the wear just yet, but so far I like the TG's much better.

Check out the BFG T/A KM2s for a pretty aggressive tread. I have seen a couple threads on them and people seem pretty pleased. I had them on a Toyota Tacoma and love them (33X10.50-15), although it is their "flotation" version with softer sidewalls. The tread is very aggressive, designed specifically with rock crawling in mind, but they work great in all off-road situations. They work well in deep snow and mud, self-clean well. I haven't tried them on ice or packed snow. The tread is surprisingly quiet on the road, Just a soft hum at highway speeds, and folks are reporting fairly high mileage out of them.

BFG makes them in a 255 80 17 Load Range E (10 ply), which comes out to 33.3" tall. That might even save me some fuel, since it will simulate something a bit lower than my 3.73 gearing. I've read several times that a 3.53 increases highway fuel mileage a couple mpg. I intend to put KM2s on my truck as soon as I wear my current tires out.

There are several threads if info. Search KM2.

Just removed BFG 315s on H2s and replaced with the Nitto TGs in 285/75/17 on stock wheels. Wish I had done this a lot sooner. The Nittos are more quiet, smoother riding and took less weight to Road Force balance than the BFGs. I think I am going to pick up a little mileage too. The BFGs wore great, but I am loving the Nittos so far.

Nittos are great! running on second set now. Both sets have gotten excellent wear and excellent miles from them. they are great on and off road. Ran a set of BFG ATs before and was slightly disappointed - they seamed to be a softer tire that wore quicker although their tread pattern is very good on and off road as well. 4 my money I will buy another set of Nittos when time comes!

Hmmmm...

Think I'm leaning a bit more towards the Nitto's but I do really like the aggressive tread pattern of the BFG's compared to the Terra Grapplers.

I suppose the next question is do I go with the D or E rating? I usually run empty and only pull about a 4,000lb boat 20 or 25 days a year in the summer.

i have 285-70-17 load range E nitto terra grapplers and even tho i havent had them very long i love them. I had death wobble and it stopped when i got rid of the pro comp mud terrains in load range D. I pull heavy so i need the load range E.
