Mirror Signals

Anyone add a amber LED signal to their fold out mirrors? Towing with my 06 Megacab would be really nice if I could make something like the Ford or Chevys. I dont want to replace the whole mirror. Any help would be great. Thanks

Been doing some searching and it seems like I am not the only one who is looking for this mod, but not a lot of feedback from anyone who has done it.

I think these would work, but may look alittle funny. http://vehiclelight.com/2clleamledma.html

I was looking at the PC rated version of this light. Grote lights are well made and I think this is the right size. Just haven't gotten around to it.

This is another option. http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs...6975&langId=-1

I've posted on several other threads with information on what I did, along with wiring diagrams and part numbers. It should be easy to find with the "Search" function.

You can't see them light up from in the cab can you? I mean direct light not reflecting off other stuff.

enafzige,
I looked at all your posts and the only thread I found on the mirror light was this https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=150019
There is no mention of the wiring done. Any ideas where to find it?

Thanks....

Although they're a single filament bulb, there's an easy way to wire them up to be used as a running/marker light and turn signals. Basically, run the positive lead of the light strip to a positive marker light wire, and run the negative lead of the light strip to a positive turn signal wire. This allows dual purpose use out of a single filament bulb. The strip will ground through the positive of the turn signal when just the markers are on. When the turn signal flashes, the light strip receives double positives (which equal a negative here), and they will go out. So, in essence, they flash just opposite of the the factory turn signals. I know I didn't explain this very well in electrical terms, but it works.

I don't have a detailed picture writeup on every step of the process (one of those things I've been meaning to get around to!), but here's a better explanation than I could give anyway:

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...rkerflash.html

If you have a service manual, it shows a simple way to remove the mirror glass to gain access to wire the lights.

If you pull back the rubber boot that covers the wire leads between the door and the body, you'll find the white multi-pin connector has several "blank" sockets. I carefully drilled a couple of these blanks out to run the wires through.

Those do look good, do you have any problems with seeing them in the cab? I know they'll reflect, but any direct light?

The mirror lights, along with 27 other things, are an on-going project on the truck, none of which have been completed! However, here are some thoughts...

With the mirrors flipped out in "trailer tow" configuration, neither of the light strips can be seen directly from sitting in the cab. With the mirrors in the regular, non-tow, position, the light strip on top can be seen directly.

If seeing this light direclty is an annoyance, or is undesired, there are two options to consider.

First, you can paint them easily with NightShades paint, that is made for light lenses (I have done this since I took those pictures). This not only tones down the brightness a little, but also gives the mirror lights a lot more subtle look. In addition, if you have tinted the front side windows, the glare is less as well.

Second, you can install a "mercury switch", or "tilt switch" in the mirror, that would automatically turn the longer light strip off when the mirror was placed in "non-tow" mode.

Thanks guys for help with the links!

I looked up part numbers for the mercury switches (or tilt switches) from

www.mcmaster.com

Part Number 7689K51 $16.60/each, 1-amp switch with 15° differential angle
Part Number 7689K61 $1.77/each, switch mounting clip

Those lights are sweet, Eric. Not too big, and they look they came from the factory. Very nice.
