looking for a roof rack need help
hey guys just wondering if anyone has put a roof rack on a mega cab that they bought and not built at home? if so where did you get it and how does it mount on the truck? And the last question is I have seen many trucks with rack with lights on them...how do they run those lights from the top of the truck? Any pictures would be nice...Thanks in adavnce for your time....Shawn
best racks on the planet.

for tires though, i dont know, the basket you put on the racks would look kinda goofy on the cab of the truck. if you had a topper, you could put a basket on the top of that, it would work out well.

not a problem. I love those racks, but I dont need one for this truck. I am sure you played around with the site, but I think there is even a option to mount lights as well.
Glad this thread got started as I have often wondered about putting racks on the roof for my snowboards, my MTN bikes go on the rack attached to the toolbox.
The question is...with the sheet metal so thin on the roof, would the towers leave dents up there, the metal tends to bend and pop back up just from washing with a sponge if I'm not careful.

with yakima, the towers are attached to the door frame, or rain gutter, so no, it will NOT dent your roof.
yakima also makes (or used to at least) fork mounts for mountain bikes that would mount to the bed of the truck, keeping the tool box free for use. make sure you get the optional fering with it, cause the wind noise off the bars will drive you crazy.

i have the small Yakima blocks mounted to the back of my tool box, very convenient and I can still open the lid without problems..
Don't want to hijack this thread, but heres a pic, they are on either side of the 6 fishing rod holders. The roof rack would be just for snowboards, they just lay in the bed on each trip, not very theft proof or damage proof....

nice setup there. yeah, I hear you about the lack of security when laying the boards in the back. the snowboard/ski racks they have are pretty sweet, locking and all. as far as damage, when I used to put my skis up there, they got reaaaaaaaallly dirty, and a couple chips from rocks, but other than that they did allright. I ended up putting them in a ski bag and then that in the rack.
Guess the only big drawback to the roof rack would be the dirty factor, the truck looks like a disaster between the mud from the parking lots and the salt from the roads when I get home, can only imagine what the boards would look like when the trip was over. Damage wise, it can't be as bad as having a couple of boards sliding into each other in the bed of the truck
Thanks for the link to the Yakima site, just made the list of things to buy for the truck a bit longer

I talked to Yakima today (great customer service btw) and the guy said the mega cab roof mounts will deform the rubber mounts if left in place for a long time. His note recommended taking the rack and mounts off between use. Diesel power had an article where they put a kick-butt rack (with lights) on a super doody. I checked that website and they do not have a dodge version.
So the search continues.

We installed one on a megacab using a water tight riv nut installation. You have to drill some holes in the roof, then install the riv nuts, with the special rubber washers. The rack then bolts to the roof. We placed it so it used the cross member in the roof to assist in support. It has been trough two rainy weeks with zero leaks. This is just one way to install one. He uses a larger rack system, one normally used in truck and jeeps for off roading. but if you can find one that does not put holes in your roof, then that might just be the right way. No chance of ever leaking if you never drill.
