K and N air filter?
Hi all,
I'm new here. I own a 2004 Ram diesel truck and love it. I just started reading here and have found it interesting. I have a question: I'm thinking of switching to a K&N air filter at next change time and was wondering if there was any consensus on the merits of do so. I know that some times K&N air filters may not be the best.
Thanks, Jay

K&N filters are actually just about the worst at filtering, IMHO. I would look into an Amsoil EA air filter.. They make a drop in replacement for your stock air box in your truck, with nanofiber technology, that will filter better than other filters out there. The one for your truck is the EA189.

a napa gold filter which is a paper element will flow 300cfm more than your stock filter and will filter the air just as well if not better than the stocker. k&n's are junk. If you can read a magazine through your air filter how can it keep 100% of the dirt out of your motor?
Why do you say avoid Amsoil filters? Amsoil filters use nanofiber technology, and flow better than most filters out there, and are DRY... I see no reason to avoid amsoil filters.

I hear that afe pg7's are the best but dont last as long. They are new yellow but mine is almost black already. 20,000 miles with pg7 and intake tube is dry and clean as brand new.
If you get a k and n, prepare to have an greasy, oily, dirty intake tube in just 10,000 miles.
PG7 filters are expensive though. But if you plan on having your cummins for a half a million miles, thats what i would do. If you plan on keeping it only 200,000, why put a filter in it? LOL hint hint. It all depends on how long you want your motor to last if you plan on keeping it that long.

The Amsoil filter will for sure last longer than either the pg7, or the k&n... Not to mention cleaning is 10 times easier than the k&n.. but I am a bit partial to Amsoil products, as I have used them and have seen what they can do for our vehicles.

I have one and so far (2 years ) it has worked well. Mine is the older model that uses the oiled Green filter and I usually clean it every 10K miles or so. Just spray the cleaner on it and if very dirty I use dish soap and a small brush and let it air dry overnight. Lightly spray with filter oil and it's good to go. Only problem I ahve found is that it fitrs slightly different on my 07 5.9 than the 04.5. It may be just my truck but the AC line near the radiator support does hit on the filter housing and required me to cut 1/2 inch off the side of the housing and a small knotch by the gauge fitting to keep it from rubbing thru. Other wise all is well.
