The Infamous HVAC Door Issue Strikes
I think the service writer just threw a big number out as a "ferinstance" which is why I wondered what this really goes for.
And yes, I do think they smoke crack - I also asked them to look at my front u-joints and described the noise they make. They told me I had worn bushings and tie-rods (which I don't doubt) and did those. Noise still there... I made the tech take a ride with me and in 15 seconds he said... "oh, that noise is front u-joints" uh doh? The truck had 10 miles of test ride on the odometer...
Based on what the tech said, I decided to let that just get worse before I start having them pull hubs (and I'm not inclined to have this dealership do it)

Not sure of why there is a temp difference between the two sides on these trucks but that is a dead giveaway that the freon is low.
First, I want to thank everyone for this thread! Circ door broke and its 106 degrees. I was sweating with no AC! Got home and pulled the circ door and now I have a cool breeze one again.
I do use the interior circulate all the time so I will go back and revisit that after midnight when the temps get back down to a respectable 90.
I still have a small mode door issue, but I can live with that. I only use defrost and vents anyway.
Again, Thanks everyone for posting such great info on our trucks!

If and when you tear it down to replace the doors, do yourself a favor, and replace ALL OF THE DOORS!!!! There's nothing like cheap insurance and you won't regret it.

It scares a lot of folks when it comes to removing the hvac system.....time is your friend here!!!! If you do the job yourself, give yourself at least a day for the job. There's lots of stuff to disconnect so be patient.....a digital camera will also be your best friend!! It took me about 9hrs to R&R mine but it was well worth it.
I just got done doing a mode door last week so I could have defrost and floor heat. Bought all four from heatertreater.com. Along with their videos I tought it was very easy since I didn't have to remove the air box at all. And the new doors are steel so no more breaking!
Been away from the site for a long time now. Within the last year have had intermittent issues with air switching from defrost to forward vents to the floor. Now it will only come out of the vents facing the driver/passenger.
Is this the HVAC doors broken, or could it possibly be some other issue. Will do the work myself, but don't wanna take the dash out and not have the parts needed on hand.
I guess a second question is do I use the factory replacement parts or the HeaterTreater doors? assuming this is the issue.
thanks
Todd

Remember, the factory stuff is what broke in the first place!!! Once you compare stock and Heater Treater side by side it's a no brainer!! You definitely have door issues....mine did the same thing....one day it would defrost, the next it'd be stuck on floor. Then vent, and back to floor. Then one day all I had was vent and wouldn't you know an ice storm moved through and I had no way to defrost the windshield. When the recirc door broke off that was the last straw!!!
Heater Treater doors have worked flawlessly now for 3 yrs.

Do I need the kit with all four doors?
BTW, I watched the videos on HeaterTreaters site. I do not care for how they hacked the heater box to install the doors. If the dash is removed or pulled back like this thread shows on page 2, is it possible to replace the doors by separating the boxes without butchering them?
thanks

I wasn't keen on the idea of hacking the box up either which is why I opted to remove the whole HVAC box. I guess you could pull it back far enough to do the job but if you have it that far you might as well pull the whole thing outta the truck and seperate the halves.....much easier. And, while you're in there it's super cheap insurance to go ahead and replace the A/C coil and heater core......would you wanna have to do the entire R&R job again for those 2 parts????
It's definitely time consuming but in the end you have something much better than what you had before. And now is also a good time to clean all of the dust from the vents and all related parts.
And by the way, you can buy the doors seperately but it's best to buy them all and fix the problem for good.

Well, five years after purchase of brand new truck the doors finally broke.
It is NOT a matter of IF they break, just a matter of WHEN.
Ordering parts from HT today...then after working 5 night shifts...my Christmas present to my truck will be new HVAC doors on the 26th...or whenever UPS or FedEx delivers the box in this busy time of the shipping season.

Its almost 10 years on mine. I cringe whenever I turn the AC on.
