08 Overhead Console Removal
08 Overhead Console Removal
Well, it looks like I have a leaky clearance light. I pulled out of my drive today and was rewarded with water pouring out of the screen of my OHC. I did a few searches and saw the removal process for the 2nd gens and for the early 3rd gens but my OHC is different. It looks like there are no screws holding it up but rather 4 pressure clips; two front and two rear.
I pried on it a little and popped the front two (closest to the windshield) pressure clips off and appear to have gotten the pressure clip on the rear drivers side loose but it won't come completely free of the roof and the passenger side rear clip won't budge. I am putting almost the max amount of force i can on it before i am sure the plastic clips will break and it isn't coming loose. I am reticent to put any more force on it for fear of busting the clip; I don't even want to know how much a new OHC housing would be from the dodge house.
That being said, i need to get this thing off so i can dry all the electrical connections. This truck is almost 9 months old with 25000+ miles on it and I can't afford for it to start having electrical problems. Any and all help on how to get this little devil loose would be appreciated.
P.S.-Has anyone found any one type of silicone sealant that is better than another? I was thinking of using aquarium sealant this time rather than automotive tube silicon. It is clear, easy to manage after laying a bead, and is specifically designed to withstand water. Any thoughts?

No clips in rear. There are two screws under the covers of the reading lights. Sounds like you already broke the driver's side...
Carefully pry out the reading light lens. Unscrew the two screws. As you discovered there are two clips holding it in the front.

Thanks dude, i got it. For reference sake, the two screws under the reading light covers are torx head, t20 i think. They are the same as the headlight adjustment screws. I didn't break anything, the fixed nut that the screws fix into is a pressure clip itself, just one that doesn't come all the way out it seems. Nothing broken but everything was removed, dried, and reinstalled. Hopefully there wasn't any damage to the circuit board or wiring harnesses caused by the water. I also sealed all 5 clearance lights with aquarium silicone. It shouldn't be too hard to break free when i need to replace bulbs yet hopefully will still seal against water. Thanks.
This may help, I downloaded this a while back just in case My overhead lights went out. It appears you have it under control but it still might help.
READING/COURTESY LAMP REPLACEMENT
Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
Remove the reading/courtesy lamp lens. Using a trim stick, gently pry the forward edge of the reading/courtesy lamp lens outward.
Remove the reading/courtesy lamp socket from the overhead console. Rotate the reading/courtesy lamp socket one quarter turn counter clockwise.
Remove the lamp and socket assembly.
Reverse the above procedure to install.
OVERHEAD CONSOLE REMOVAL
Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
Remove the overhead console retaining screws, located in the sunglass storage bin.
Using your fingertips, grasp the sides of the overhead console and pull straight down evenly to disengage the two snap clips at the front of the unit.
Lower the overhead console far enough to access the wire harness connectors.
Disconnect the Electronic Overhead Module and the reading/courtesy lamps electrical connectors.
Remove the overhead console from the vehicle.
