its time to put a trans pan on the ole girl now that summer is here and it above freezing up here and trans tempsbecome a possible concern, the only question i have is this: does any of the deep pans out there come with a suction spacer to drop the strainer lower in the pan or not, I saw it somewhere a diesel power magazine article that they installed one in a allison when they put a pan on it but I cant find one anywhere for a 68RFE, Is it actualy needed or am i worring about nothing

Do not believe everything you read in magazines.
I installed my MAG-HYTEC pan in Mar 09 at 16,000 miles; I now have 55,000 miles with no issues. I tow a 11.5k 5er during the camping season and have never been over 180F (trans temp’s) since I installed the Mag-Hytec pan.
I did replace both filters in the transmission; one is a spin on with a seal that needs to be removed which is difficult to get to. I replaced my trans fluid with 9.5 quarts of ATF+4 trans fluid from Amsoil. Here is a link to their page.

My maghytec double deep pan came with an extension for the filter pickup, towing my 5th wheel I have never seen temps above 180 also, usually 155 to 165. seems to work great, I do a full service on my trany every 30k miles. 114k so far.
now for the next question, if a mag hytec is doing great things adding 3 to 4 quarts of oil then would the ATS pan do better things by adding 5.5 to 6 IIRC?
my gut instinct says for what i do its overkill and another $60 over the cost of a mag hytec

More capacity is better, but I agree is probably overkill. The Mag should be just fine. I love mine and the temps stay nice and low when towing.
Just put one on my 2010 truck. Nice piece over the stock piece of junk. I did mine for ease of servicing. My dealer quoted me $1200 for trans/t-case/front/rear diff service.
Makes me mad, cause there is only $140-160 in costs for fluid/trans filter. I was even thinking about drilling the stock converter for a drill plug, probably isn't worth the effort.

Go with the double deep pan. It saved my bacon earlier this summer. I had what I thought was a very slow leak in my pan gasket - and had lost more fluid than what I would have thought judging from the occasional drop on the driveway. Well when I finally checked my fluid the dipstick was bone dry! However, the deeper pan with extended pickup kept the fluid flowing just fine and it's still cherry red!

I've had mine in for just over a month and I love it so far, I haven't seen over 152 degrees no matter what i do to it (hot weather, stop and go driving, mountains and the combonation of all of the above)
I couldnt find anyone who mentioned the suction spacer block for the 68RFE applications so i just went with the mag pan......
