I talked to a guy over at Piers friday and I think he said that you cannot do much to the stock turbo. Is this right? Those guys know there stuff but maybe I just misunderstood.

There are several things that can be done to a stock turbo to handle more power, like a bigger exhaust howsing will keep it cooler at higher HP's you can also modify the waste gate to support higher Hp. HTT makes a kit that replaces the compressor wheel and other parts to help support more Hp to I believe.

I don't think you can do much of anything to the 03+ stock turbo seeing as how it's an HY35. Not to mention that the wastegate on the 05 is electronically controlled. The HY35 is only efficient to about 300-320hp and 30-35psi of boost. Anything over that kills it.

well if I mod the stock turbo it will be used in a set of twins. Has anyone moded a 3rd gen turbo? Id like to hear from someone who actualy has done it. I guess what I want to know is what mods can be done. What do they cost and what benifits will I see from them.I looked at the HTT site and they only show turbo upgrades for 2nd gen turbos. I did send them an email to see if they have anything for us 3rd gen guys. im also goin to email Harry at Piers and Ill post the info I get back from him as well.

Found this online as well

The 5.9 litre Cummins 600 OHV Inline 6 cylinder is fitted with the Holset HE351 turbocharger which allows the engine to deliver more power and more torque than its MY03 predecessor despite having the same turbocharger envelope size. This is the first Holset turbocharger to utilise the compressor cover mounted ‘Command Valve' wastegate technology.

Is the turbo the same for 05 & 06?

I believe the Piers mods cost about $400. Just put that towards a PS62 from ebay. You can find them for less than a grand...

I've run several Piers modified versions of the stock turbo, one of which was a really nice turbo that I sold after testing and is still in use on a member's truck today, being flogged daily. Piers can do good things to the stock 03/04 turbos for little cost, but it stops there. The turbos on your 04.5s and 05s are already bigger on the compressor side, where it counts, than the 03/04 turbos. Not much Piers can do for you that would be worth the money.

About the only thing Piers would have to offer is make that turbo tough as nails by putting in a fatter shaft and extreme bearings for use in a twins setup. If you were willing to spend the cash to do that specifically to use in twins, then they certainly can fit it with a slightly bigger wheel while they have it apart. You would have to be made of money and be after every ounce of air you can get from it. Nothing that would do you any good at all if you were going to run it as a single. Probably wouldn’t do you any noticeable good in a twins set, buy hey, if you can afford twins you might as well go all out, right? If your intention was to "optimize" it for a killer quick spooling top turbo in a set of twins then sure if you have the $$$. Probably looking at $600+ change for a wheel, shaft, and bearings as there is machining involved.
