Cool What Lift?? HELP

I am going to need a lift as soon as I get my new wheels I have the 315's on stock wheels now and they just clear, when I get my 17X10 wheels with a 4.5 backspace it will hit for sure. First off I just want bit of wheel to hang out will the 17X10 give me the bit extra im looking for as apposed to the 8" wheel?? I only want a little more. Next lets say I do get a 2-4 inch back space or whatever what lift should I get, I don't want it to be to aggressive I like it now, would a 2" leveling kit do the trick if I kept the backspace to a minimum?? All help would be appricated thanks!

What I did was picked what I thought were the superior parts from certain companies and put my own kit together, and all I can say is my truck rides far better than any of my friends trucks with just a (1) name brand lift/suspension kit on or off road, do your homework........

But what is the least lift I can get away with and can I get away with simply a 2" leveling kit?? All I'm doing is changing to a wider rim with more backspace.

you need 5.5-6" bs to clear 315's with just a leveling kit and wheels 8-8.5 wide. with 17x10 w/ 4.5bs you will deffinatley need a lift.

Ok, so pardon my stupidity I don't get the backspace thing?? Wouldn't 5.5-6 inch backspace stick out further?? What backspace would I need to only have it stick out about 1-2 inch past factory. I agree with the wheels sticking out to far look funny. Thanks alot guys and sorry for all the stupid questions just need to plan properly for this want the right combo.

Don't quote me on this one, but I believe the bigger back-spacing the farther under the wheel well the rim will be. So, a 4.5" BS will stick out farther than say a 5.5" BS. Not sure what stock BSing is, but I would go an inch or so less than stock...this should stick out an inch or so more than stock. Hope that makes sense. I've seen better explanations of this whole idea on some different wheel websites. They've got pics and stuff that help. Hope I didn't confuse you too much and I hope I'm not wrong. Correct me if I am please. Now that I think about it, try askjeeves.com. I bet ol' jeeves could explain it better.

rambunctious is right in his backspacing explaination,

back spacing is a measurement of, the inside lip of the rim measured in to the mounting flange(where the rim seats against the axle)

for example the factory rim is a 17x8 with 6 inch back spacing. now lets say u go with an aftermarket rim that is 17x8 with 4.5 inch BS, this rim would stick 1.5 inches out further than stock.

u really need to do some research on all the different rims out there because there are so many different rim widths and back spacing options.
