Weather resistant/proof air intake?

Which air intake is the most weather resistant/proof? I live in MN and we see lots of rain and snow. I would like to find an air intake that won't be sucking it all into the turbo... Thanks.

Yup, that's a nice one. Or you can cheap out like I did and install a PG7 drop-in and a PSM cold-air intake. The PSM and AFe draw air from basically the same spot, right in front of your right front wheel well...

Get a AFE II Proguard 7, & the nylon sock for it. I live in the wettest place in the country, & I have no problems.

I had one of those on my '03. It's alright for 04.5 and up trucks, but they catch all kinds of water and snow on the '03-'04 trucks. There is no rubber shroud between the charge air cooler and the headlight like on the newer trucks.

I removed the rubber shroud in front of my air filter. The nylon sock gets dirty, but the filter stays clean. I just pull the sock off a couple times a year, & wash it. No problems here.

I use the stage 2 with PG7 as well as a prefilter, Up here it's been through -40 winters and rainstorms (like all this past week) without issue. I just pull the prefilter and wash it every so often.

I second that. I must also mention AFE's customer service is top notch. After cleaning of the filter(50,000km) I noticed a couple of pinholes so they sent me a new pro guard 7 no questions asked. They didnt even want the old one back. And I do recommend the sock as well as when it gets damp its easy to wipe off as opposed to the filter getting damp and depriving the engine of oxygen.

I am curious about the effects of water on some of the aftermarket filters/intake systems. People only drown in floods here twice a week in Houston, so I am probably being overly cautious. Just wondering if anyone has had any water related issues with their aftermarket intakes.

With my '03 and the AFE Stage I with the old-school steel torque tube, I sucked in a lot of water in a couple of serious downpours. The filter was completely soaked, even with a pre-filter. A couple weeks later I replaced the filter and looked inside the torque tube. It was full of this flaky white corroded looking stuff that was flaking off and getting ingested by the turbo. I had the tube powdercoated inside and out, no more problem. I also got a piece of lexan and did this:

I'm sure intake temps were much lower without the shroud, so I only ran with it in the winter.

Now I have a PSM and don't worry about a thing.

Thanks JC. Appreciate the info and the photos. The shroud is a great idea. I am going to ask varouis manufacturers about this, curious to see if there is any difference between various filter materials as for dealing with water.

My worry was that the water would displace the oil on the filter media, rendering the filter less effective than when fully impregnated with oil. Additionally, dirt particles suspended in a fluid is more likely to travel through a filter than a dirt particle in air. Therefore, in my opinion, a wet filter will let more dirt pass than a dry one.

OTOH, when it's wet outside, there's not too much dust to worry about Just what's already on your filter.
