Question Need opinions on best water resistant prefilter

The good news…TWINS ARE ON!

The bad news…..my BHAF is not going to fit, so I'm stuck using a big AFE PG7 for a while. I'm curious what your opinions are on who makes the best water resistant prefilter, AFE or Outerwears. I have had both and remember the AFE prefilter being a little thicker material than the Outerwears cover. Other than that, not much noticeable difference. Both appear to be made out of the same material, but you never know. I have an Outerwears cover on it now from my BHAF, but is way to big. What are your thoughts?

Great news on the twins. So did you modify either or both of those OE turbos from BD? How does it run? Be sure to post when you dyno with the difference the upgrade gave you.

Modified both, ported, polished, and coated everything but the compressor housings. Took me almost 4 weeks to get them ready and 3 days to install. What a pain that was. I did a 250 mile break-in today and so far max EGTs WOT to 90mph in 4X4 HI are down 320*F over my B1. This was with just a VA C3.2 at 100% and 45 lbs of boost, which happens to be the only box I still have numbers written down on with the B1 for comparison. Can't wait for 60lbs! A little more break-in time and I'll let-r rip. Here is what's interesting….I did the same thing on stock power with nothing but a boost fooler just to see what I would get, WOT to 90mph in 4X4 HI netted a max EGT of 690*F at 36.5 lbs of boost. That is hilarious. In stock configuration just the way I drove it off the lot, this truck would top 1300 degrees easy doing a WOT run to 90mph. That is over 600*F EGT reduction with only 36.5 lbs of boost.

I guess I'll have to get another AFE prefilter, fill them both with water, and see which one leaks the most.

Panty hose makes a good outerwear. Also makes a nice temporary belt.

AFE Pre-Filter

I have the afe pre-filter on the Pro-Gard 7 and seems to do fine. I take it off and wash after going through high water or muddy fields. Can definitely see that it keeps moisture and mud off the filter.

For those that have been wondering, I did a test the old fashion way. I got one of each and filled them both with water to see which one held the most in....which would equate to which one would keep the most out.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with the Outerwears pre-filter. I specifically spent extra money on the water resistant version (yes you get a choice). When I held it under the sink, I could not get 1/4 inch of water to stand in it no matter how high or low I had the faucet dump it in. Water seemed to go straight through it like it wasn't even there.

The AFE pre-filter on the other hand surprised me. Faucet wide open, putting as much pressure behind it as I could, and it filled slam to the top. Even at a steady trickle, it took a while, but it still filled without loosing enough to bark at. The only leaks were at the seams and a few dribbles here and there. Much, much better at blocking water.

There you have it.

Mines due for a washing.

I'll have to due that test as well.

Wondering though, did you test the inside or the outside,
perhaps it is only water resistant one direction, the important one?

Well, I have to say that helped a good bit. I got about 3 inches to build in it before it started pouring out faster than I could get it in. Still not as good as the other, but a marked improvement. At that rate, it would probably do fine in a rain storm unless your turbo was sucking some serious air. Who would have thunk it.

Since the AFE is more restrictive w/ the water, would the same hold true for air? In other words, does the Outerwears breath better?

You know I did that too. Doesn't appear to be any difference. At least not detectable by blowing through them. Not very scientific though.
