Smarty Jr. vs others?

Afternoon Gentlemen,

The "quick and dirty" fellas is that I'm looking for a progarmmer that is going to improve my trucks driveability, give me that quicker spool-up (reaction time..), and simply add moderate power without causing major mechanical probelms (drivetrain...tranny) before I am prepared to upgrade them.

Point is, I hear A LOT of good things about the Smarty Jr, and outside of the obvious questions about MPG, HP, and TQ advantages. I would look to ask about the smoke?

Don't get me wrong...I'm a sucker for "Rollin' Coal", black smokin' imports, and all the great things that come with owning a diesel. However, I just want to make sure that it's not everytime I "modertely" get into the fuel I look as though i'm trying to smoke screen an intersection. If I were in high school I would be upset if it didn't. But with the wife and kid, I'm afraid it could get a littel ridiculous...

I really apprecaite any insight.

Lastly...I see a good bit about the programming of the JR as well. Is this difficult to understand?

easy to understand. the only one confusing is torque management. it was kind of back wards to me until i read it about four times. the new tunes do not have the smoke problem if you do not drop torque management to low. just get one and set on default tow for the first year and forget the pod feature. that is for kids to fiddle with.

Oh she can smoke for sure but that is controllable by you and playing with what setting works best for you. Me with new tranny the defaults seem to be the best smoke wise. Great power with lower hazel on heavier throttle or quick small black cloud/puff and then wham !Oh! and she's moving. Some other devices will yield lower smoke but raise rail pressure alot higher as well. Which could lead to shorter life of injectors. Also a side note if bio diesel is in your area 2 gals per full tank will eliminate 90% of smoke no matter what setting your on. Thats a B5-10 rating give or take. I keep a couple 5 gal cans around of bio.

Hey Guys...I really appreacite your comments. I feel that I have 100% made up my mind to go with the Smarty JR. Just had a couple last minute inquries before pulling the trigger.
Not trying to sound like a "baller" by saying this, but it's not so much the money as much as it is keeping things as simple as possible. I mean, let's not kid ourselves...no matter what you do to these trucks (big or small) your messing with a $40-50,000 investment.
Thanks again guys!

Can any of you provide a "cliff notes" on the setting of the Smarty JR and what the advantages/ dis-advantages are of each setting?

In short, a cheat sheet...

The Jr is very simple.
SW1 for mileage
SW2 for towing
SW3 for performance

I have actually found I get the best mileage on the SW3 performance setting. I run the torque management on 2 usually and timing on 2 with the PoD between 60 and 75.

Each level you can set the timing and torque management or leave them at the Default settings. It is all explained in the paperwork you get with the Smarty. After you get it try several different settings and try to run at least half a tank of fuel or more before changing and record you results. That is what I did.
After you get it, if you still have questions, just ask here

Hey Rockcrawler - I just ran my Smarty Jr on a 1700mile trip pulling a 8000lb load. Setting was simply SW2 - Towing. Do I have to dick with the PoD? I did not go there. I want it to be 99 as my foot will control the boost etc. Or will it be set at 99 by simply choosing SW2?

As soon as you load any level (1-3) the PoD will automatically be 99. You don't really need to mess with it but I have found that with mine the 99 on tow and performance will smoke more when I get into it. However if your towing you are not really trying to mash the go pedal either!!
When not towing you should run level 3 or 1. Level 1 you can probably stay at 99 just because you are still pretty close to stock power. Level 3 and 99 is fun to drive but my truck smoked like a train and would also slip the clutch
Time for a new clutch
