removed baffle, but silencer ring????
hi everyone. this is my first post, and i am glad to say i have just traded in my F250 6.0 psd POS. i love my new ram, and must say its a night and day difference from the 6.0 psd. that being said, i will get to the point of this post.
i am familiar w/ the intake baffle and "silencer ring" delete. i have already removed the baffle from mine w/ only 130 miles on it. basically just cut one of the baffle plates and the rest pretty much fell out.sounds good considering i could not hear the turbo at all from inside the cab before removing it. now i can hear it blow off as well as the whine.
what i am curios about is the funnel shaped ring that everyone is referring to as the silencer ring. to me it looks more like it was installed to help direct the air into the turbo. it looks like if you remove it the air would hit the lip behind the ring. i have seen this application before in import drag racing and am not so sure that dodge installed this ring as a silencer. i dont see how it would have much if any affect on the amount of sound/loudness that you hear. does everyone know something that this newb is clueless about? does dodge actually call it a silencer ring? i guess the simplest way to see if it changes the sound would be to remove it, but i would be more worried about air flow into the turbo w/out it. can anyone shed some light onto this subject for me, THANX. btw, i tried searching and didnt see anyone bring up this point.

Welcome to DRT, Ghost!!!
Not too sure about the 06 application, but the black piece that you took out of the tube that connects to the turbo is the silencer ring. DO NOT take out the fins that are in the turbo assy, they help direct the air. Not too sure about the baffle. Look in my pictures, I have a pic of the silencer ring out of the truck. Hope this helps out!

I haven’t messed with my intake yet, however from what I’ve seen on here you need to either modify or replace your stock air box and/or modify/replace the black plastic intake piece right before the turbo to get any turbo noise.
i have a 2005 2500 CTD and i removed the intake baffle prior to installing my intake kit and it helped gain about a 1/2 a mile better in fuel milage. the silencer ring i have also removed makes the turbo a good bit louder, you can really hear it whine. but i tested my truck with and with out the silencer ring with my afe intake and i found that without the silencer ring i get a tad bit better fuel milage and i also noticed that the turbo seems to spoil up a little faster and my egts were even about 50 degrees lower
Here's what I did on my truck...

hey madhat by looking at what you did you removed the inline baffle but havent touched the actual silencer ring. I may be wrong but i was under the assumpton that the silencer ring is a metal ring that is held in place in front of the actual turbo by a metal c-clip. If search i know that someone else had post a cummins website that showed how to remove it

03 is right the silencer ring is a metal ring that is actually inside the turbo just in front of the compressor blades. It is held in place by a 4 inch metal c-clip. To remove it get a pair of needle nose pliars and some small flat head screw drivers. Then work one side of the c-clip up and grab it with the pliers. It shouldnt take to look ive done 15 or more of them the shortest took under 1 min but on the truck i have now i just couldnt seem to get it off and it took around 10 min. Also its been show to do nothing to performance, nothing gained and nothing lost. Just more sound out of the turbo.
Isn't there 3 pieces in the intake that can be removed?
1. the silencer ring at the turbo housing held on by a c-clip (can be removed)
2. the louvered plastic air deflector in the intake elbow (recommended to not remove this elbow as it smooths intake air-flow)
3. and the "X"-shaped baffle in the intake tube (can be removed)
Am I correct?

yes, those three pieces are all in there, but i only removed the baffle from the intake tube and it sounds great to me. plenty of spool up and blow off noise inside the cab.
the ring on the inlet side of the turbo can also be removed, but i have seen these rings installed in performance applications before and those were installed to prevent surge. i feel better leaving mine alone.

Recommendation: leave the 90 deg. turbo inlet elbow elbow with the off-white plastic air directors in and don't alter this part.
edit; either purchase an intake tube that is smooth or fab one like others. The air actually moves as fast as 300+ mph under full boost!!!!
