Quick question about tapping the pyro

Just talked to the guy that will be tapping the pyro for my quadzilla commander, and he stated that if they don't remove the turbo and they usually don't that the chips that manage to fall into the exhaust manafold just go straight out the exhaust...is this true? He tapped the pyro on my 02 ram and everything worked but just wasn't for sure how accurate this was. He said there was no chance of it damageing anything....Thanks

If simple precautions are taken there is virtually no chance of hurting anything.

No problem, I've tapped all three of mine that way, and the 99 twice again on Sunday !

I put a big magnet on the manifold when I tapped it, then before I pulled the magnet off I hooked up my vacuum with a crevice tool attachment and stuck it in the hole.

Prolly didn't need to but I did anyway.

I did actually take the turbo loose. Took the 4 nuts off and then had to take the exhaust bracket off the tranny. Then the turbo just pushes down far enough to get a rag in there and then drilled and tapped the probe. Was pretty easy actually. No issues.

I have had two done now by the mechanic at work and all he does is drill and tap the manifold, no special precations. The first one I did myself with all the grease, vacumes and other witch craft. Haven't noticed a difference in either method. I am not too worried about some shavings going through the turbo as I read some where that at start up the turbo isn't spinning so as the exhaust start's exhausting it pushes any shavings past the turbo.

Besides, as of now I no longer plan on getting another new truck which means no more pyro holes need to be drilled.

This is a question I was pondering when I tapped my manifold as well. My decision was that it really doesnt take very much time to undo the turbo, and then there is NO chance anything could get hurt. I know people who have drilled and tapped without any precaution, and people like me who seperated the turbo from the manifold...all trucks are still going strong. No real help in my post, but what the heck...i'm posting anyway

A buddy of mine tapped his witht he truck running. Anything that would have fallen in, blew out in his face. He has 20k miles since with no issues.

Yup, simple and done. Removing the turbo is waaaay overkill. I used a small magnet to remove most of the shavings when I did mine.

In all the years I've been on diesel web sites I have never heard of anyone hurting anything tapping the exhaust. Use a magnet (as a precaution) and insert it in the hole to get the chips out and you are good.

Tap away my son.

Another quick word of advice. As the turbo is below the exhaust manifold the chips will fall down. You will not be able to pick them up with a magnet. Only able to get any chips left in the hole. If you want, blow some air into the hole if you have an air compressor. That will help blow any chips or what have you past the turbo with it not spinning.
