Tapping for pyro!
Tapping for pyro!
What kind of grease do you use to grease the drill bit when tapping for a pyro, and also how do you know when to stop turning the tap, how deep do you go? Does it bottom out or what, I have never tapped anything before! I am planning on using an 11/32 drill bit for my 1/8"-27 npt tap, will this drill bit work?
Any grease, it's just to catch chips and try to keep them from going thru the turbo, use on tap also. The pipe tap is tapered, you will need to tap so far then test fitting-tap to depth. You don't want the fitting protruding into the passage way, just the probe. And the 11/32" drill is correct.
As mr4wlr says the tap is a taper pipe tap so just keep in mind you can go to deep. Practice on a peice of 3/16" or 1/4" thick metal to see how far and to get the feel of how far to turn the tap before backing it up to clear chips. Turn the tap clockwise until it gets a little hard to turn- stop- back up tap 1/4 turn , or so, to clear the chip it made. Repeat the process until you reached the desired depth.
I taped mine with the exhaust brake on and WOW it blowed chips so hard I had to put on gloves. Practice first. Taps are very hard and brittle as they will break..........JIM

Yeah i had to keep backing the tap out the whole way to clear the chips. I had to clean and regrease the tap. lots of chips. then i did the magnet trick because it got out lots of additional stuff. In the end i was very sure i had most every chip out. Now here s the thing the taper on the tap will go to far for a tight fit so dont go all the way in. just take it slow and it will be fine.

i drilled mine with the engine running, and tapped it with the engine dead with loads of grease on the tap. 11/32" drill bit is what i used. if you are not use to tapping with a 1/8"npt tap, i suggest you test tap a piece of scrap metal that is around 3/16-1/4" thick. you can get a feel for how far the pyro adapter piece will thread into the metal once you tighten it up [it is a tapered thread, you don't need to super tighten it up, ±1/2 turn with a wrench after you turn it in by hand as far as you can]
yep
Also, can I use a spray-type lubricant on the bit?
