Question? 03, 5.9L HO tapping at 50K miles
03 Dodge 5.9L HO Cummins with 50K miles. Engine has been quite until lately and now I notice a more pronounced rattle(Tapping) from the engine. Sounds like Gas engine with loose valve. The noise goes away as soon as I give any throttle. The dealer said there should be no problem and that it is normal when the engine reaches 50K miles or more to make more noise. The rack does not need checked until 130K miles per the manual.
It is no louder than some Diesel engines but has gotten louder as the engine breaks in so I am a little concerned.
Is this normal for the Dodge 5.9L HO engine?
Thanks for any help.
UPDATE > I was reading a posting from "Buffalo" and he stated "There are a number of us, out there, including myself, that have had injector knocking problems in the 3rd Gen. engines. It seems that if you are not running these newer engines hard, they can carbon-up the injector tips, causing the knocking. DC would not take care of my problem & that of many others. Some of us have cured the problem with the use of additives including injector cleaners. It worked for me."
I will try this and see if it solved the issue, Thanks Buffalo even if it wasn't on my thread....

Try adding some Seafoam to your diesel fuel. Some guys have even dumped the Seafoam directly into their fuel filter canister for additional injector cleaning.

I tried some injector cleaner this weekend and it did seem to help the rattle but did not stop completely. I will pick up some Sea Foam today and give that a try.
Thanks for the help

WideTrac, be aware that it may take a couple of tankfuls with Seafoam before the carbon gets completely cleaned out. During those tankfuls run it hard to get the cylinder temps high enough to burn off the crud. If you have a trailer it would help to pull it around to work the engine even harder.

I get it at the local farm supply store, but here is a link to other vendors.....

I used the Sea Foam, also but, after clearing up my problem with fuel additives. Did this to insure clean injector tips.
I've, also, heard that the valves can be a bit out of adjustment. They may be within the spec.'s but, could be closer & possibly quieter.
