Question for "guys-in the-know"

I've been reviewing some of the past posts on information about intake manifold horns. I see various manufacturers all claiming to have the best flow. Banks, CFM, ect. A question that came to mind is,... isn't the airflow more directly tied to the cfm that can come through the rubber hose that bolts to the manifold air horn? It seem like bolting a 7" muffler to a 4" exhaust pipe. How can you get the "benefit" claimed by a 7" muffler if your restricted by the 4" exhaust pipe? I'm sure one or more of you fellows has a comment. I am looking for ways to increse the towing power and efficiency of my truck and I know from my gasser days a good intake made a difference. Is it all that substantial on a diesel?
Thanks in advance for the info.

the reason most claim improved airflow when replacing the stock horn is the internal restrictions of the stock at the 90* bend just prior to entering the grid heater assembly. you're right about the cooler hose, but the cross section at the bend is pretty tight.
however, i have a buddy that is at 675hp, on a stock intake horn.
so is it needed? i guess not after watching him dyno.

I dont think they do too much nice thing about them is the fact that they come with hookups for alternative luquids. And they look nice.

Agree. Until you drop 25k into a motor, the +2 HP gain that you get from the intake horn will not matter. They do look nicer, and have ports for nos and boost guages.

There's some results posted on TDR on the new AFE intake, on a stock truck with no other mods. It looks like it gave about 15 h.p. and 30 - 35 ft-lbs.

If you are wanting a nice intake horn I think the AFE or ATS would be about the best choices.
I have the ATS and have owned the banks also.

The GDP horn is straight forward...and cost effective!

I think the reality of it is that a pressurized intake on any turbo charged vehicle is much less sensitive than a normall aspirated engine. You don't have to worry about scavenging on the intake OR exhaust. Now this all goes out the window if you get into the EXTREME end of what the engine is capable of, and at that point every little thing needs to be done.

The simple fact is that you are developing boost (pressure) because you are throwing more air than the engine can ingest. The engine is a big restriction for the turbo not the intake horn. I would agree that they do look better and you already have bungs for guages, but it's not going to gain you any horsepower, at least not any appreciable HP. I guess if you had all the other mods that you wanted...why not...but it would be pretty low on the priority list for me.

Just my worthless opinion.
