Question about exhaust tip

What difference does the length of an exhaust tip make? For example 4" X 5" X 12"? 18" ? 24? I am gonna be putting a magnaflow muffler on my truck with a SS 5" tip and am wondering how long of a tip I should go with?

it's pretty much personal taste, but a longer tip has a better chance of reducing resonance... I went from a tip that pointed down and back to straight out sideways, and resonance went up.

I know when I went from miter cut stacks to turn-back stacks on my 97, the volume w/ the windows down went down big time... even though the sound waves and exhaust flow are directed straight out, the sound waves definately go out 360* from the exit... this can resonate against the bedside... if the tip is longer you've got a better chance it'll reduce resonance

i went with a 24" long tip-just for the fact that it looks like the whole exhaust is stainless- it goes on all the way up to the bend-so it was a perfect fit! i think it looks cheesy when you see a short stainless steel tip. it just looks obvious its just a tip and usually the rest of the exhaust is rusted/discolored.

?. When you install a tip, do any of you cut the pipe back, or like I did - just slip it over?
Never given it much thought untill this thread.

Before you install the new tip paint the stock tailpipe with some high temp matte or flat black. Really accents the SS tip.
Think I have a photo in my pic gallery.

Definitely. And also, make sure it's too far out. I positioned mine 10 times, had the wife give an opinion, moved it around some more then welded it.

From that night on I always looked at it as if it was too far out. It's all what you like. In my opinion, longer (overall) is better for ONE thing, to hide that measly 4" pipe it's connected to!

I went with the 18" long tip. I think it was just right and would not go any shorter. Definatley cut the pipe, my buddy didn't and when you look at his tip you can see the other pipe.............not good!
I slipped mine on, got it where I wanted it and marked the stock pipe with a pen. I measured the clamp surface of the tip, lets say it was 3", pulled the tip off and measured 3" back of my mark and cut with a sawzall.

I have a fairly short 5" tip on mine. It looks OK, but I wish I had bought a longer one. I however did NOT cut the stock pipe, and you cannot see it (mine was the black exhaust, not the gray aluminized)
