Problems w/ 04.5...help.

Ok....help.

Just to open a discussion...I am a little stumped.

My 04.5 has been acting up...

10k ago I installed a 62/14/65 and Flux Mileage Injects on the truck which already runs the Juice/MP-8 combo.

Truck ran GREAT...then problems 7k in...

White smoke at start up, rough idle, and poor mileage.

I have pulled the injectors and had Don M inspect them...what a great guy he squeezed it in just before he shut the doors of his old shop! They were fine...with just a little sign of pressure damage. So he repaired them and scolded me. Be carefull with small injectors and pressure rise! I don't have a rail gauge on this truck right now after tuning...and I am thinkign 50% on the MP-8 might have been too much.

Anyways..they are fine now and he thinks that that was NOT my problem.

I have not tested my fluids yet...but it appears my oil level is stable and I had no other leaks. At higher rpms than idle...it clears up...but the hard starts/white smoke make me think that the cylinders were filling up.

It has never been run over 45 psi...maybe 47. Maybe a head gasket?

Arhhhhh....

LET the trouble shooting begin.

Thanks in advance!

electrical connections all clean for the injectors ? lil noise could do ugly things not felt at higher rpm. good clean terminals on battery ? again, lil off voltage and a system designed to run based on voltage is off its rocker. simple and free checked first. No sludge in bottom of filter housing ? nice clean filter 2 -5 micron ?

i dunno, but i ran my stock injectors at 100% on the mp-8 more than a few times and i never had a problem. i also noticed that with my GDP setup, if i dont let the key sit in the on position for an extra second before i try to start it, it does a hard start thing too. but if i let the key sit on for a second longer, it fires right up. sorry i cant help out more

Juice been checked? sometimes after a while they can do weird things. Have you pulled the juice to see if eliminated the problems?

knowing you, you've checked for codes.....

pulled the MP8 to see what it did????

im probably just blabing, you've probably already done all of this.....

Does the white smoke smell like antifreeze? It'll usually have a sweeter smell to it and smoke white quite abit.

All electronics will be pulled...and the process fo trouble shooting will begin.

The white smoke really seems like unburnt diesel...

My 04.5 smokes and rough idles when the temps are around 25-40 degrees if not plugged in. If I plug it in no smoke no rough idle. Colder or warmer than that without plugging it in and I don't have the problem either. It's strange but it has never caused any problems in 34k miles. There is a flash specifically for the 04.5 for this problem but I never got it done because the truck runs so good and the overhead is only a couple tenths off from hand calculated with my boxes on. My cousin had the same exact truck as em and couldn't stand the smoke so he had it reflashed. Sold the truck after that because it just didn't run like it did before the flash. The 04.5 trucks are a strange breed but they do make some awesome power. When I first brought the truck home from the dealer, I could smoke the neighborhood out. Looked like one of our old small cam 350's in our big trucks. They don't call the Cummins motors ragburners for nothing.

What was the weather like when you were getting these symptoms? How is the timing set with the Edge Juice? Do you have your grid heater plugged in?

I noticed in colder weather if I forgot to plug the truck in overnight, with my grid heater deleted, and I had the Smarty set on an odd number (advanced timing), I would get a lil white smoke on occasion. It's weird, because after installing the Flux 2's and having the grid heater deleted, the truck went several nights without being plugged in and did not have a problem. Then, like you said, all of a sudden, I started getting a lil white smoke. AND, I did get a bad batch of diesel somewhere which caused me to have a rough idle. I threw in some Howes Diesel Treatment and topped her off with fresh diesel from Flying J, and the rough idle is gone. The weather has been warming up, and I haven't noticed a rough start in about two months or so.

Not sure if any of this is helpful, just tossing out suggestions.

Problems fixed...whatever it is...it is gone.

Don M is the man...and maybe my install went a little smoother with it above freezing this time!
