Lift pump died...
Lift pump died yesterday on my stock 2004 with 41,000 miles. I have been using fuel additive from day one... didn't save the pump! I'll be getting the in-tank retro on Monday. Hopefully the in-tank will last longer.

Why don't you go aftermarket? like a Glacier kit?
thanks
Gary
at first truck will probably die at a random....then not restart or run for short time periods....
check the codes with the key trick....P0628 is the lift pump.
hey there !! thanks for the info .. i think it is eminent that these things go .. i just hope i am not out in the toolies somewhere ....
Thats why a lot of guys go aftermarket and leave the stock parts in place...so if the aftermarket parts fail, you can hook up the stock lift pump on the side of the road IF you carry the appropriate tools. thats good insurance to have!
so your talking about a fass or rasp system of something along those lines ??? so if you use these systems you by pass the stock lift pump all together ???

and yes, they totally bypass the lift pump on my truck anyway (but i have an 05 with an in tank pump,) yours could be different...someone else chime in here please
About a month before it died it would surge and run rough after I first started it in the morning. Then after I left the gym on sat. it started surging slightly and it almost died at a stop light. I barely made it to my in-law's house, luckily it was all downhill. After that it would start then surge to 1200 rpm's then die. I knew then the pump was dead... checked the engine codes and sure enough P0628.

The 03-04.5 trucks have it mounted from the factory near the fuel filter canister. 05 on up trucks have it mounted in the tank and if the dealer replaces yours it will be put in the tank too.
It is common for the lift pumps to go out, but I think the intank pumps seem to be holding up much better. Pushing the fuel is easier on it than pulling it.
But, if you want better reliability or plan to mod your truck for more power it would be better to upgrade to an aftermarket pump like the Walbro or FASS.
I watch my fuel pressure gauge like a hawk and do plan to upgrade my fuel pump soon.

Unless you really don't want to pay for it, and have the dealer replace it (assuming you are still under warranty), I'd definately go for a Glacier Diesel Kit, or a FASS. I personally installed a Glacier Competition Kit and couldn't be happier.
I would strongly suggest a Glacier kit or an Airdog kit......
after driving with a FASS for 6 months and then going back to stock for a couple of weeks, I could tell the difference. Not night and day difference, but noticeable to me. I won't ever run a stock LP again.
