Installed new remote starter with 15 second delay...

instead of wiring directly to the grid heater ready status (where ever that is...).

I had them set a 15 second delay for the grid heaters to do their thing.

Has 15 seconds proved to be enough of a delay for you guys in colder climates?

I can set it to 20 seconds and that seems very long, but I estimate 15 sounds OK for say...0-10*F in the morning.

That sound right?

Any response will be appreciated.

Thanks,

DT.

The wait to start only stays on for about 13 secs. even in the cold. I have used the 15sec. delay without issue personally. Hope this helps.

Thanks Muddy!

What kind of cold are you talking about?

We usually get a few consectutive weeks of 0-single digits around here in January.

I don't think I've ever seen that wait to start light stay on for more than 15 seconds but I've never timed it.

Thanks again,

DT.

Mine is generally on for 10 to 13 seconds in the temps you're looking at. Last winter while sledding in quebec at -20f it stayed on for about 35 seconds. So if you do have a real cold snap it may stay on longer.

What brand of remote start are you using. I would like to install one but have not started looking yet.

It's an Audiovox Pursuit, model #9775T

WOrks good so far.

They did have a problem though. Originally the hooked it up to read back batter voltage. Reading this allows the unit to determine when the truck is actually running so it can turn off the starter.

That didn't work too well so they found another signal (a pulse) to plug into a tach sensor to determine the when it's running.

So far so good tho.

Check it out:

Good luck,

DT.

The remote start unit doesn't allow the ECM to power the grids as it sees fit?

Almost all remote starters have a "glow plug" wire, however dodge doesn't have a wire that it can be hooked to since the dash on the 3rd gens are data controlled. So you either have to soldier it directly to the "wait to start" led in the dash (which is a huge pain) or use a delay timer (which most starters also have). You may be able to hook it directly to the grid heater relays however they cycle on and off while the truck is running so I'm not sure if this will cause the remote starter to shut down or not. (haven't had a chance to try it yet).

I've done probably 100 of them in the past few years and I've always had good luck with Crimestopper, CodeAlarm, and UltraStart (manual trans). Reguardless of brand I recommend one with a "2-way" remote. That way if your in a resturant or at work and you want to start your truck you don't have to be able to see it to know if your in range or if it started, the remote tells you.

Mine is set for a 10sec delay and it's never been a problem.

I have a Black Widow that I am swapping over to the new Viper 5900, I have installed the last generation of both companys a few times at least, both seem to get the job done. I definately backup the statement to go with 2-way though, makes a huge difference.
