30 second search delay.....

I am assuming the "This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between searches. Please try again in 1 seconds." delay is to keep the server happy? Just curious. I double click "new post" on accident all the time and get the dreaded...sip your coffee and do nothing for 30 seconds message. I can see where it would help keeping the number of hits to the server down to a minimun, is that it?

I believe it's to prevent "Denial Of Service" Attacks from hackers where they flood a targeted website with messages/commands whatever until the system locks up or crashes.

oh, I see, I thought is was just to drive me nuts. our server here at work is so slow, sometimes you have to hit it a few times just for the request to go through. then I have to wait, good thing I get paid by the hour.

Jack may have also set it up this way to reduce the load on the server.

A search request is nothing in terms of hits but it's a lot in terms of usage on the database. The 30 second wait time is in place for two reasons. Firstly, it prevents search flooding where someone could just hit a huge nasty search over and over, bringing the site to its knees. Secondly, it helps in terms of letting the load on the server level out if a search taxes the database a lot.

Some terms you search for don't load the server much at all. Other terms can take a while and create a large load. It just depends on how many times the word or phrase you're searching for has been posted.

The load for traffic on our server is very low 99% of the time, even during peak hours. It gets a bit busy when there are a lot of searches going on but even then, the server is pretty much sleeping no matter what time of day it is. The setup we have now is much stronger than the old server we had. We beat that thing to death but it did its job for three years before we had to bite the bullet on this one.

When I first upgraded the site a few weeks ago, the server was getting nailed but we put in some fixes for that and since then, it's working great.

Well, thanks for the great site. I was just curious. We have a T1 connection here at work, but it is shared with about 60 folks, so sometimes it is slow. Getting slower every day due to hackers and stuff like you said.

Thanks again.
