Exhaust drone
Exhaust drone
I am wanting to install an aftermarket exhaust for my 2004 CTD with cat. I am concerned about the exhaust drone that I have heard about from some manufactors. Which exhaust system sounds great but will not drive me nuts when towing my 31' trailer 65 mph?
I have the Aeroturbine 4040L muffler on my 05. I love the sound. Nice rumble outside, a little louder inside but no drone. The regular 4040 would be louder because it is shorter. The Aero is a bit more expense then others, but shop around. I was quoted everywhere from 225 installed to 350.
I think the AeroTurbine 4040L is the best thing; expensive, but very high quality and performance, especially when you mount it right on the downpipe and use the cat for a big fat resonator...
I just had my local shop straight pipe my truck for $50 when they did the oil change and diff. fluid. It is about the right voume now. You can be quite and you can be load. If you have your radio on you won't hear any of this infamous drone. Imo it sounds great.
Been running straight pipe for six months now. Drone was there but didn't bother me nearly as bad as the raspiness. The common rail just doesn't sound the same as the 2nd Gens. When i pull heavy the drone is worse than when not loaded. Just got my MBRP muffler for the DTR shop and installed it wed. night. It's much quieter at idle and the raspiness/drone is gone. Still loud when you mat it but the wife said put the straight back (not loud enough). I like it because it's loud when you want and quiet too. Just my .02

I am running the 4" MBRP system right now. It sounds awesome till I start towing, then the drone just about drives me crazy, I have (since my last holidays) installed a resonator. Havent been able to test it yet while pulling my trailer.
