EGT sensor question

Is there a significant difference to installing my EGT pyrometer in the exhaust manifold versus putting it in the exhaust pipe downstream of the turbo ? I am thinking that it would prevent the chance of metal shavings getting in the turbo. Would there be that big of a temperature difference?

Could see a 300-400 degree delta between the two areas.

alot of exhaust energy(heat) is converted to mechanical energy to spin the turbo, so there will be a significant decrease(like mikey said 3-400*) pre to post turbo.

I drilled & tapped the hole in my manifold with the engine running. All the chips blew straight back up while I was doing it. You just have to be quick about it so the tap doesn't get too hot.

That is not the best way to do this. If you break the drill bit or tap or even just chip one of the flutes you could easily damage the turbo. Use a vacuum to suck as you drill and tap or unbolt the turbo and drop it down a 1/2" to put a piece of card stock in between to prevent chips from dropping into the turbo.

Did mine the other day. Duct taped the exhaust pipe ( at the rear duh ) and left a slit in it. That helped buil up more pressure. Then drill slow and tap slow. Gloves help because it will get hot. Use some grease and take your time. Very easy to do.

You boys are flirting with DISASTER! Why would you change running metal shavings through your turbo when all it takes is about 15-30 extra minutes to remove your turbo?

Just seems a little silly to me.

Out of all the posts I read on this and other forums, I have only read 2 or 3 that had any kind of a problem. No disaster for me. Like most repairs, take your time, do some research to know what you are getting into and everything else is just nuts and bolts. Or this case drills!
