Edge EZ and boost elbow? how do I know
Edge EZ and boost elbow? how do I know
I picked up my 04 305/555 used with 4000 miles. It had an edge box already on it. How do I know if the optional elbow is installed and if so what will it do? If it isn't, should I get it? I only use this truck to tow the race car.
Thanks
Thanks
You could either "listen" for the turbo spoooling up to about 35 PSI or look at the rubber hose that goes from the turbo to the wastegate. If it's a factory style clamp on the turbo side, it's probably stock. You could take it off, take the elbow off, and look at the elbow and if it has a TINY piny hole, it's the Edge boost elbow.... otherwise it's stock.
Ditto. The clamp is usally the giveaway.
You will be fine even if you don't have the elbow. You just won't get as much boost and your egts may be a little higher. I had my EZ on about 10 months before I got around to installing the elbow. It runs the same without it...

Thanks guys. The elbow is the original one. I may change it when I put the box back on. I took it off until my gages get here and hooked up as I was afraid of damaging something.

Just a word of advice. If you put the elbow on make sure the EZ is hooked up as well. If you run the truck with the Edge elbow ON and take the EZ OFF (for dealer work or whatever) you will throw a code or 2 (overboost etc)

I just installed my elbow that came with my EZ and I was impressed how fast the boost comes on, it seems to peak about 35psi, that is the drawback to my ISSPRO Turbocator gauge, 30psi max number reading.
I took the elbow off the extra boost did nothing except stress my turbo. The edge will liven up the low end without it. The boost elbow doesn't seem to help the upper RPM's either just makes more boost and more pressure but no more real ponies. My EGT's are not an issue I have good flow on my truck at level 3.
BTW you can pull the hose on and off the Boost elbow and keep the factory clamp. The dealers are looking closely at this part when deciding to do warranty work on the turbo.

At 25 psi, you are approaching the air flow choke point of the turbocharger's tiny little 9 cm exhaust housing. I'm measuring 500 degrees pre versus post temps at 27 psi boost.
All this means that with the boost elbow, its possible to build very high drive pressures, and make your boost gauge do impressive things, with no substantial effect other than putting the 'charger's long term reliability at risk.
We've been discussing a particular hy-35 failure (with boost elbow) over on the TDR. debris in the intercooler to boot.
OKAY, you got my attention, I just took mine off, you scared me. I'm leaving in the morning for a long haul to the UP of Michigan and didn't want to take any chances, haven't really pulled the 5th very far with the EZ installed and NEVER with the gauges installed, is level 3 too high to even think about pulling in? ALL advise is considered and helpful!!!
Based on what I see on my truck with the EZ, i would not tow ANYTHING with the EZ on ANY SETTING without gauges. no way. take the box off if you want to tow, unless you have a pre-turbo EGT gauge.
If you meant "never WITHOUT the gauges installed" you can certainly tow on level 3 I think. just drive by the EGT gauge and back out if things get too hot.

I hope I didn't hurt anything, like I said interesting to see what temps I do hit now. All this was before I joined this board and "Have seen the light", I guess better late THAN never. Thanks for the advice, well received!!!
