does the kitty rob you of power

I am going to put on a 51" donaldson muffler to open up the exhaust. SHould I leave the cat on or take it off? I dont want the truck to be any louder. So does the cat rob you of power and raise EGT's.

Yeah, it does. But if you remove it you will probably increase exhaust noise.

Someone in the past did some dyno runs with and without. The only noticable differences in these tests reported was an increase of EGT's by 150 degrees, nothing worth reporting on the power side.

In addition, removing the Cat Converter is illegal.

When Diesels come under local Emmissions testing rules (probably sooner than later) You'll be reinstalling it.

I hope NOT. but ed is right, it is illegal and wrong to tamper with, alter, modify, or remove a federally mandate emissions device. it will slightly lower egt's and create more noise.

Maybe you guys have some strict inspection guys up north, but down south they check out all the bells and whistles on the truck before they even bother taking a peek under it for a kitty...

I really doubt Texas will be putting any diesels on the rollers anytime soon
Even if they did, it would be for the newer trucks on foward, I doubt they would even mess with trucks that are 3, 4, 10, 15 years old...

Is that a typo?, seems strange that EGT's would increase with less restriction.

Well, I should have said the EGT's were 150 degrees higher with the CAT, or I could have said they were 150 degrees less without the CAT. Sorry for the confusion, trying to get a lot covered during lunch The one item that caught my attention was that it did not really improve the HP and torque numbers...

More drone with out the cat I rode in 53 ****** truck yesterday MC with cat+resonater straight pipe. His exhaust is quieter than mine without cat and a 4" flow through muffler. His also sounds deeper than mine. Not for long though as he is installing a 7" stack today.
