Cummins

Back in '03 with 10,000 miles on the clock, I tried a Banks 6 gun on my truck.I left it on for a month or so and doing some reading up on warranty I decided to take it off and sell it.I'm having an issue with Cummins on my engine, and when they get it rebuilt they want to get the ecm printed out to see if there ever was any performance things done.I now have 113,000 on the truck. Would there be any sign of the banks 6 gun in the ecm?
Thanks Dave

Man, that's a tough one. I'd call banks and ask them.

Since the Banks was a performance box and not a programmer and that long ago I doubt the ECM memory would be effected or have any trace.

Assuming that with 113k miles on it you're out of warranty so it shouldn't matter. Do you have an extended warranty of some sort?

Cummins

Cummins is rebuilding my engine.Look under "oh crap".They want to be sure I have no engine enhancements. In their words they want to be sure it leaves their shop stock.By the way I talked to Banks this morning and the tech said tuners leave no trace because they are downstream from the ecm.Programmers however are talking directly to the ecm and leave stuff in there.

I was not thinking that the banks was after the ECM. At the most, the dealer could see that the truck was operating outside the normal parameters, i.e. over boost, rail pressure, etc. However, these notes are erased after a certain number of key cycles.

I'm pretty sure you're good.

Don't Believe the Manufacturer

Not sure about your specific situation. However, back around 2006 when my truck was still under warranty, I spoke with Bully Dog regarding their Power Pup programmer and they assured me that there was no trace of it left on the ECM once it is set back to "Stock" setting. Of course that's exactly what I wanted to hear from him, so I went with it. $7,500.00 worth of transmission problems later, the Dealer and Dodge made a losing argument to the (female) Small Claims Judge regarding how "most people with these trucks tamper with the computers". On appeal, several attorneys from Dodge showed up in Superior Court with all types of reports and exhibits representing readings taken off my truck when it was in for service. In short, Bully Dog was wrong, and at least in this instance, the ECM readings were able to show that the ECM was tampered with. I lost on appeal based on ECM readings brought into court by Dodge. In the end, I upgraded my transmission the way I wanted it but I think the point is whenever you modify-- you assume a risk no matter what the manufacturer tells you about how invisible their products are.

Well all I can say is I hope Banks is right.I can only go by what the tech and the legal guy told me.The legal guy said also that if something showed up they must prove that the box did the damage. We've all heard that before. But they both swore up and down that the 6 gun leaves no footprint.

To glass... It looks like you had a programmer and not a tuner.Like Banks told me tuners don't leave footprints..programmers do.
