04 Cummins vs 05 Cummins Engines

I have a 2005 3500 Dually with 375,000 miles. My buddy bought the same truck but his is a 2004 with 60,000 miles. My engine tag says 325 hp and his says 305 hp. I use the triple dog power pup and it makes a huge difference. We put it on his and it made no difference at all. My truck blows his away no matter what. Even with the Crazy Larry setting on his and mine running stock. Anyone know why? We also noticed the turbo size difference...

The 05's seem to really take well to programers and chips.. Plus you have the 610 series cummins instead of the 555.

I'm not sure your bully dog is compatible with his truck, obviously it isn't working if your stock and he has the down load but your beating him ... that or he has a fuel pressure issue, sorry but 05 aren't much better than an 04, at least not in the amount your saying...

If the trucks are running right then stock vs stock you should be dead neck and neck on a race. If either truck is reprogramed or has a pressure box then that truck should win hands down..

Why would the 555 with less horsepower and less torque stay with a higher horsepower truck? That would be like saying a stock 05 610 would keep up with the 6.7

That is what I thought. Bully Dog told him the programmer is working, but he isn't even blowing the "Black Cloud" yet. Mine covers a two lane road in black smoke when turned up. He had his fuel system checked at the dealer and they said it is good. At this point we are totally confused. His turbo outlet is over and inch smaller. Needless to say we need to help him.

It's the wrong programmer for his truck. The 03-04 was different than the 05 and up. There was also no Crazy Larry for the 03-04 to my knowledge. The power pup was the first mod I made to my truck. Gave me 130hp.

It made a huge difference in my truck. Why would Bullydog tell him it would work? What makes these engines so different?

maybe the guy he talked to was thinking 2004.5... i would imagine that the differences between the 305 and the 325 motor would be enough for the BD not to work on his truck correctly..

It does in fact work on the 03-04 trucks. But it doesn't work well at all. The Bullydog shines on the 05 trucks, specifically autos. The turbo is considerably smaller in size (54/58/9cm vs 60/60/9cm) on the 03-04 trucks and are limited to whatever it can handle without overspooling. A Smarty or Diablosport would wake that truck up much better IMO.

Because that HP is measured at the crankshaft not the wheels, so you only have +20HP and +70ftlbs of torque, BUT now your also pushing it through a cat convertor... Have you seen the actualy dyno numbers on a stock 305/555 and a 325/610??? They are only a couple #'s different... If it is possible for you, only load a 20hp setting on your truck and I bet you won't even feel the difference from stock unless your towing and the tq takes over..

The 04.5-05 engines just plain run better. They respond to programmers and boxes better than the previous years. When you talk about a full build, then the engine year really does not come into play, they are pretty much all the same.

With the Bully, Crazy Larry will only work correctly with the 04.5-up engines. It will still load into the 03-04 years but does not go beyond the std programming.

I guess I should give more details... My 2005 is 5" off the turbo back to 5" stacks. No muffler or cat in my system. It has the automatic transmission. The 2004 has a 5" all the way back without a cat or muffler. It has a 6 speed manual transmission. I understand that the factory dyno is relatively close, but these trucks are nothing alike. Pulling with his truck is like driving a non-chipped 12V. How can 25+/- hp make such a difference?

it could be something else is going on with the 04. You should not really be able to tell a differance between the two. Way to close in number to tell, or maybe automatics are just better!
