Checking for boost leak?
Checking for boost leak?
My truck will only get about 30#'s of boost. I have even tried a couple different brands of boost foolers. Still 30#'s. What is the easiest way to check for a boost leak?
Thanks for your help!
Thanks for your help!
i'm not too familiar with the boxes or 3rd Gens but it sounds like one of two things...
1) the wastegate is set to 30#'s, you can adjust that
2) the smarty jr isnt working properly, you can only build so much boost there are two major factors A) amount of fuel and B) turbo's limit. you can only build so much boost with a set amount of fuel, having said that, since you can build the same amount of boost with or without the smarty jr. sounds like it isn't adding fuel. (or the W/G is opening) again i'm not very familiar with the boxes so i'm not sure what each brand does..... hopefully someone else who knows more than i do will chime in.
also it seems like when you get a boost leak you get more black smoke (more than normal), loss of power, and high EGT's..... hope this helps

that is the best link i found for ya.... you can try more searches but from reading that one yours might be "fixed" too.... i see yours in a 04.5 and this one pertains to 03-04.... not sure if your wastegate is set up the same or not..... you could always get an aftermarket one if yours is "fixed" as in the thread above..... also i will start another thread and ask the same question about the wastegate. sorry i cant be more helpful.... i though someone with more knowledge would have chimmed in by now.

might want to moniter that one too. hopefully we can get this figured out!

Unfortunately you are correct 04.5 and up have an electronic wastegate. You cannot adjust them but you can change the signal to them to open later...hence why modules are able to obtain higher boost numbers.
Before going through the checks of boost leakage you might want to try another boost gauge or test yours to ensure you are not just dealing with a bad gauge that won't go above 30 regardless of what pressure there is.
To properly test for a boost leak you essentially plug off the turbo with a big cap and plug off the intake tract before the intake manifold and pressurize the system, let it sit for a while and check to make sure there is no pressure loss.
Personally I would first make sure you use a known good gauge that will for sure hit above 30psi accurately.

so do different boost foolers allow for different PSI??
could it be the smarty jr.? maybe trying a different programmer (or whatever you call em) could confirm if the box is the issue (if there is someone close by with one). checking your gauge is a good idea, why didn't i think of that???

Basically the module or in this case the programmer alters the readings from the MAP sensor so the engine computer doesn't see the actual boost pressure at the MAP sensor but instead the altered reading, from there the ECM controls the wastegate according to what the ECM sees.
