I just purchased a 2003 Dodge 2500 SLT Quad Cab from a dealer in Sacramento CA. This rig has a 5.9 HO TD and looks great. My question is; after doing some research, I found that the HO TD was not allowed in CA in 2003 - So how is a dealer allowed to sell this to me? Are there any smog issues? (My first Diesel)...

I believe the H.O. was not available as new in CA , once it reaches a certain number of miles on the vehicle, a vehicle sold in another state can be sold here in CA. I could be corrected , but the mileage would be something like 7000.

California prohibited the sale and registration of new 2003 Cummins HO. California defines "new" as any vehicle under 7500 miles.

Any "non-California" vehicle with over 7500 miles "at the time of purchase" is considered "used" and can be registered in California.

Diesel vehicles in California are exempt from smog testing.

 

The law must have changed in 2004 because in May I bought a brand new 2500 HO TD 600 6spd SLT.

 

Felix , the 600 is a 48 states legal , it is sold in CA also.

 

The California law prohibiting the sale and registration of new "non-California" vehicles has been on the books since the 1970's!
