Hello,

Friend of mine has an 03 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD with aprox 110,000 miles truck has been surging for 2 weeks when under heavy throttle. Most noticable in 3rd 4th or 5th gear.

New fuel filter and Has gone through several tanks of fuel as he pulls trailers .


Truck has always had good power but the last two weeks -- when you are going on down the road it goes forward a bit and falls back a bit "surge"


Has anyone had this happen ? Any clues?

He should probably check it for codes first. It may tell him exactly what is going on.

If he has already changed the fuel and air filters, my first thought would be the lift pump if it is doing it under heavy throttle (most likely cause with that many miles), followed by the injection pump. If he doesn't have a fuel pressure gauge, he will have to take it to the dealer to have these checked.

 

mine does that but when the cruise control is on....

 

If he has a boost gauge, what is it showing while the surging is happening?
Same question about the fuel pressure gauge.
