Best/Opinion on Air Intakes etc....
Not saying your wrong, just saying what an AFE tech himself told me. They said stage 7 filters "almost" as well as the stock filter but moves about 50% more air (I think the stage 2 moves about 200% more air?). When I asked what "almost" means he said it filtered 98% that of a stock filter and you can't gain something w/o giving something else up. It makes since, especially after seeing the huge clump of "white-filtering-stuff" attached to the bottom of the stock filter.

Here is some reading from AFE if you want to look at it. I know it is all marketing stuff, because they want to sell air filters. But I can testify to the fact that it FLOWS way more air than the stocker....and my OWN oil tests dropped the silicon parts per million from 8 down to 4 by switching from the stocker to an AFE Stage 2, pg7 with outwear.
Im sure there are plenty of other quality aftermarket air intakes that could produce similar results too.
But in my opinion, the stock air box is very restrictive.
The only disadvantage I see to an AFE stage 2 is the price and to some people it may actually be to loud for their tastes. Personally, I love to hear that turbo whistle some.

You're right, they do filter a lot more air. And you're spot on about the cost being too high for what you get. After I sent my AFE kit back, I went with the large (kinda pyramid shaped) K&N filter and then took out the Dremel and cut about a 1/2 dozen or more vertical openings into the sides of the stock airbox. Much more airflow, more than sufficient filtering (I'm seldom on dirt roads for any length of time), better performance and about $350 cheaper than going the AFE route. Don't get me wrong, I liked the AFE quality and customer service, but I could not physically tell any difference once their product was installed.

Well it looks like I'll being going back with another AFE, Stage 1 with the Proguard 7 filter. I just completed my own torque tube this weekend. I gutted the rubber boot to the turbo, replaced the plastic tube with a piece of 5.5 aluminum pipe, painted it red, re-assembled, test drove. It's amazing how much this thing whistles with such a simple mod. The turbo spools quicker as well. Total expense = $7.25.
Is it because of the internal rubber cross-section that keeps it from whistling? I had a Stage 2 kit and sent it back because I couldn't stand the loud whistle.

Hmmm, and I'm starting to have second thoughts about any 'aftermarket' cleaner kit.
I think I'll look for a sock one like mine, change the filter to a better one and cut the edit out of it to get more airflow....¿
