Just finished putting a AFE stage 2 on my truck, and man does this sucker whistle. Maybe just me, but I think it might be too loud for my tastes.

Nice product, but I really don't think a person would need something that flows that much air unless there were some other mods to the engine.

I am another vote for the AFE Stage 2 with pro guard 7. It definately sounds like a jet engine at take-off. Pretty loud.

My oil analysis' from Blackstone showed 4ppm of silicon after 5000 miles with the AFE. 8ppm with the stocker. Better flow and better filtration with the AFE. I likey.

People deffinately like their AFE's, they're just way overpriced IMHO.

+1 on that

I ended up with a Volant from autoanything.com, they have free shipping and you can easily dig up a 10% on line coupon so the total was in the $260 range.
The new Volants use the Proguard 7 filter and the fit & finish is excellent.
I left the silencing ring in for now (I like to hear the radio).

The tech support at AFE told me you can't gain one w/o giving up the other. He gave me the percentages of how much more air the stage 2 and stage 7 filters take in, and then he gave me the percentages of how much each one filtered LESS than the stock filter. It seems like stage 2 was 92% and stage 7 was 98% filtration compared to stock. He said the slight loss in filtration really didn't matter if you're mostly on the paved roads.

In the end, the AFE stage 2 I had produced WAY too much whistling for my taste and I could not tell any difference in performance and the gas mileage "appeared" to have went down. I returned it for a full refund.

Now I've added the large K&N air filter inside the stock airbox and I'm very happy with it.

Last night I changed out my front lights to the SilverStars, which meant I had to remove the airbox. I guess I was living on the edge last night and decided to take out the dremel and go to town on the airbox. I basically made it look like a jail cell which opened it up to A LOT MORE air. I left the bottom of the box alone because I don't want car washes that spray up to clean the underside of the truck to soak the filter. I didn't notice any significant difference in turbo whine. I'll post pictures tonight.

Did you compare to the S&B's? I like the clear top, gives you an idea how clean it is, the S&B's a cheaper but don't have much of an "intake" I think, just a hole on the rad support side.

I'm surprise no one has come into this thread about that test in the diesel magazine where they found NO HP or torque gains with these things, despite all the claims in the ads.

(I still gotta have one though)

Read my comments above your posts. This makes me feel better. I was beginning to wonder if I just didn't know better.

Im going by MY OWN OIL's analysis. The AFE filters the air better than the stock air box. The air goes thru 7 stages of filtration so it is filtered better, yet the surface area of the AFE is much bigger...so more air is coming thru. I don't have any data to support that other than my own experience and I thought that AFE advertised the same.

Not saying your wrong, just saying what an AFE tech himself told me. They said stage 7 filters "almost" as well as the stock filter but moves about 50% more air (I think the stage 2 moves about 200% more air?). When I asked what "almost" means he said it filtered 98% that of a stock filter and you can't gain something w/o giving something else up. It makes since, especially after seeing the huge clump of "white-filtering-stuff" attached to the bottom of the stock filter.

I like my Amsoil dry filter that I replaced my K&N with it filters better and seem to flow just as well.
