I do, however, sincerely apologize to you for forming complete sentences with proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Sorry if you can't keep up.

For the rest of you who can read:

IMO there's nothing wrong with a 4", 5", or 6" straight pipe. I like big exhausts, as they sound nice and deep. The exception is when one has a stock turbo with a straight pipe. They sound shrill and harsh without a muffler. Put a proper turbo on and it's all good. If not, put some sort of resonator or muffler on to cut the harshness (from the restrictive 9cm housing and wastegate) and leave the nice deep rumble that comes from the mighty Cummins.

In my previous post I was just commenting on the BS systems out there that use the stock elbow and downpipe, while advertising that they're 5" systems. Why bother with a 5" downpipe-back pipe? You're not going to gain anything performance-wise.

Cheers~

It's all good fun
The problem I have with your post is that you basically said a person is wasting time by using a 4" downpipe to a 5 inch exhaust...and that effeciency isnt increased by doing this. Dont talk about things that you really havent experienced. I did my mods and kept the 3.5" downpipe to stock 4" straight for a few days. I was seeing some higher temps than I wanted. Got a 4" down off an 05 and a 5" straight complete exhaust for 275.00. It was a very cheap mod...30 minutes and it was on.

The temps went down. I have increased effeciency therefore it is a good solution.

So, was the efficiency increase you saw from going from a 3.5" to 4" downpipe, or from the overall package swap? Who's to say you wouldn't have had the same results with a complete 4"? Without doing back-to-back dyno runs after each stage of the mods I don't think you would be able to tell.

Whatever the case, the only trucks that I think sound awesome completely straight piped, regardless of turbo, are 1st and 2nd gen trucks. No raspiness there. Just a deep, loud bark. Maybe if I P-pumped my '07 it would sound the same...

By the way, send me a pm and explain "bent." It's an expression this west coast guy isn't familiar with. I gather it's a compliment on my intellect and sense of humor...

Its a mild way of saying "take your opinion and stick it....." or something like that

I saw results and I experienced this personally. Before I did this I asked 2 different performance shops that were unafilliated and one guy in VA and one guy in NC and they all 4 said the same things about the 3rd gen. Enlarge the down pipe to 4" enlarge pipe to 5" and you will see cooler temps. Cooler temps improve effeciency. Which in turn builds HP. Now if I could have aquired a 5" down pipe or a exhaust that was a complete 5" I would have went with that because I am sure that would be more effecient - but I couldnt. I went with what I had and what I could afford. It was economical and easy to swap and install. I see cooler temps.

Now for the look and sound. I love the sound of a straight piped third gen. It sets you apart. In my town there must be 50 1st and second gens, stacks and regular straight exhaust. When you hear a straight 3rd gen before you see it you know its a 3rd gen. When you hear the other two before you see them...you cant tell whats coming..."Ah its just another one". Several times this summer at truck pulls I got comments about how 'mean' my truck sounded and that it was a very unique sound that you cant mistake for the other two.

I agree a straight piped 3rd with a 4" is a little raspy but with a 5" the raspiness is gone.

5in cost me around 80 bucks,no cat or muffler on it right out the back end,it's loud as well, not to much in the cab but outside it is.

Just call around to an auto parts store and find some 5 in pipe or 6 in start from were the cat comes off and there you go, I also used some small chain for hangers.

Took me a bit to get the old stuff off, grinder and a sawzall.

My advise is to get it in 2 sections that way if you have to add the muffler for an inspection you can take 10 mins and put it on.

By the By in PA as well Shamokin area.

How much of a temp drop are ya'll seeing by going to the 5" stuff? Right now I run 4" cool duals, with a Magnaflo muffler in place of the MBRP and the truck gets real hot, real fast.

I barely have anything in my 5" exhaust, after selling the stock tailpipe, downpipe, and muffler on ebay. might have 75-100 invested. I got mine from ebay, place called fullspectrumperformance.

I would go to 5" mainly for the sound. The heartthrob system from summit has a 4 inch down pipe that bells out at the bottom: "The systems include a 4 in. down pipe for enhanced pulling power at highway speeds, and use an actual diesel muffler (not a modified gas engine muffler) to resist clogging." The way they are selling it, this system would not lose low end power because of the 4" down pipe but should still sound different than a full 4" system.

This summer I have seen 600degrees-700 cruising @70mph 2000RPM (depending on grade) 750-800 80-85mph. Diablo on extreme and Juice off.

Right after the last mods I did I was still running the straight 4" and if I remember correctly I was seeing 150 to 200 higher with the 4".

So probably a good 150 degrees with me for sure.
