Power steering filter

Now that I am caught up on all the 120k fluid changes (except for power steering and brake fluid) in my "new to me" truck, it is time to devote some time to the steering. Just ordered my stabilizer from Custom Diesel, and have saturated everything with WD40 for the past couple of weeks in anticipation. Is anyone running an inline filter on their p/s? What kind of fluid pressure am I looking at through the cooler?

I should have done a search first. Found all kinds of info. Guess the coffee is taking a while to sink in this morning.

well post some results of your search! don't leave us hangin.. i have been doing a bit of research myself. still finding psi and gpm for the later model trucks.

Geno's is showing 1450-1550psi relief pressure and 3.1-3.5gpm on the 2000-2001 trucks with hydroboost.

would need to know the psi on the return side of the system and find a filter that could handle that psi and provide enough gpm flow to not restrict anything.

it is a good idea. would make the pump and gearbox last longer.

dang it. another thing to ponder on the new truck!

Racor and a company called Magnefine make them for auto transmission return lines. Says they can also be used for p/s, but no flow and pressure specs yet. Seems like the return pressure would be fairly low, judging by the hoses to and from the cooler, but the flow is my biggest concern. Hate to blow it up trying to make it last longer. More research to do. Half the joy of owning these great trucks is thinking of ways to make them even better !

i agree. I would think that 1/2" line would be in order with push lock or even make a braided line to be cool. lol.. brain working overtime now thanks! LOL

Bout time. LOL
I think the braided would work as long as there is sufficient room. Hydraulic hose and fittings. I can check with Baldwin on Monday about this too.
I never considered this before. I wonder if the high pressure can just be left alone and just filter on the low pressure side? Maybe that was posted on here already. Low on coffee and my brain has not quite fired up to full capacity this morning.

DUH!! LOL

low psi return side should be fine as long as there is not much restriction. would not want to cause a backup and then run into other problems.

running to coffee machine. need more caffine!

got some flow rate numbers for ya'll

2003-2007 (5.9) 1800 (+/- 50psi)psi with 3.5-4 gpm
2007-2011 (6.7) 1800 (+/- 50 psi)psi with 3.5-4.0 gpm

doing a filter on the return side would work as long as you did not impede flow back to the resivoir. these are pretty low gpm numbers so it won't be too hard git r dun.

Thanks for the numbers. That is a fairly low flow rate that could be handled by several types of filters. I like the Magnafine idea, but mounting it would be an issue. By the time you fill it with about a quart of atf, it is going to be too heavy to just hang it off the cooler lines. Am now thinking along the lines of maybe a marine fuel filter housing with an oil filter on it. I need to crawl under the truck and look for possible mounting sites. Something to ponder. I do think that filtering the low pressure side would be sufficient, and a heck of a lot easier.

After some more research on the Magnefine filter, I found that the filter was actually smaller than I had originally thought. The Ebay ad had it at 4"x7" (probably the measurements of the box) but a certain well known Irish parts place says that it is 2 1/4 x 5, and they have it listed as a power steering filter. That would be quite a bit lighter, and I would feel comfortable suspending it between the steering box outlet and the cooler. I figure it is worth a try.
