Anyone add a Power Steering Fluid Filter?

Has anyone added an inline spin type fluid filter to the power steering on a 3rd gen?

Seems pretty easy to remove the line to the cooler and put in a filter setup.

I drained the fluid from this 06, lower cooler line, the atf oil had breakin like material in it, imagine it was the original stuff. Gonna run it a while and change it again.

What do you guys think? worth the trouble? anyone sell a kit?

I run one, its an inline filter but I dont think its the same type you're talking about. No real trouble to it. Cut the line, stick the filter in. Only reason I did it is because I drilled a small hole in the reservoir to keep it from pressurizing. Figured a little more crap would get in there now, and it can't hurt.

My cap was pressurized too, i researched the forums and found its common thing on 3rd gens. Tore the cap apart and cleaned it, hoping it would take care of it.

Can you take a picture of your filter, I'd like to see what it looks like, I see Orielly's Parts Store has a inline not in stock though,

is it a paper type filter? is it large enough not to imped on flow?
do you notice any difference with one on it?

I've had two steering gear boxes replaced under warranty. They flushed the fluid to get rid of particles. If you're still under warranty I'd get the gear box checked.

You may want to look at getting the fluid flushed. They told me that it could damage things long term if I didn't. Having said that, they charged me $90 to do it. Since everything else was covered under warranty I gladly paid it. I guess the filter may do the same job as the flush? Let us know how it turns out if you do it. I'd put one on mine, but my extended warranty runs though Nov. 2010 and I won't want to give them any excuses not to fix something.

One other thing - I noticed that when they replaced the gear box they replaced the reservoir as well. I was surprised they did that. My old one pressurized pretty bad. This new one is larger, and only has a little bit of pressure in it when I remove the cap. FWIW.

I'm just about to put in a new gear box and have been trying to find an inline filter also. Cameroneod, what one are you running? I found this magnefine filter that is cheap and easy to install but you need 1/2in ID return line to splice into. I just looked real quick and the return line from gear box to cooler and back to reservoir looks like 7/8in OD so i'm thinking its too big. Anyone know if you could put it in the return line from the hydro boost, that line looks small so i was going to check the ID??

That's where mine is. 3/8" - fits perfectly, right under the master cylinder.

I had to snug up the adjuster in my steering gear after only 25k miles. I flushed it and installed a Magnefine in the hydro boost return. Hopefully good to go now.

Brilliant!! So I just went and looked, and ace is on the $$. The return line from the hydro boost is 3/8in ID and it is already cut and secured with a few clamps and plastic connector just below the cylinder. So you don't even have to cut anything, just put the filter in line and re-use the clamps. wish i would have done this long ago.... only $15 for the magenfine

anyone know how to flush out the old fluid, or do you just suck it out of the reservoir and re-fill?

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Could take return lines off reservior and pug reservoir nipples. Add fluid between very quick engine starts to purge new fluid into system. Reattach hoses, fill and run for 5 seconds. Let the fluid give up air for 30 minutes and repeat until fluid no longer has bubbles.

As part of my 20,000 mile maintenance interval......I suck out the old power steering fluid (you can use a turkey baster) as much as I can.......and then refill with fresh ATF +4.

I Don't use a filter though.

Would regular car or truck gas filters work, the ones that are in the frame and shaped like a canister? Or is the filter media to dense thus restricting flow.

I checked my 06 lastnight at the cooler connection thats a good 1/2 to 7/8 connection, definately not 3/8 like on my 94.

I found that Magnetic one on ebay for 3/8 line:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/INLIN...spagenameZWD1V

I check Orielly's Parts store, they have a Wix in line 3/8 trans filter, similiar to this one, its magnetic also. The computer says it'll work for the 06, but the lines seem to big to put it anywhere.

Check with some auto repair shops, they can do a complete power flush on your steering steering system
