Add motor oil or tansmission fluid with every fill up?
Yesterday while waiting in line to get fuel I noticed a guy in 2002 or 2003 Dodge 3500 putting motor oil in his fuel tank before filling up. I was really curious as to why he was doing this so I asked him. His reply was that since the fuel companies had taken sulphur out of diesel fuel it didnt lubricate the top of the engine as well. He said this is his 3rd Cummins and the previous 2 had +500,000 miles. He also said that periodocily he added a quart of tranmission fluid.

Does anyone here do this on a regular basis?

The idea of providing added lubrication to today's diesel fuel is a good idea - but lotsa differing opinions - and reasons - as to which is best. Generally speaking, use of an additive specifically MADE for diesl fuel is better than a random selection of stuff NOT specifically made for that purpose - AT tranny fluid being a prime example... I use Power Service "Diesel Kleen", a lubricity improver/cetane booster/injector cleaner formula in my truck EVERY fillup - along with a top quality synthetic ashless 2-stroke oil. Overkill perhaps - and only the eventual engine miles will tell if it's worth it or not...

ATF contains detergents that should not be put into your fuel system. If your gonna put anything in your tank, do it right, buy the stuff that was designed to treat the fuel system.

Standard motor oils - especially in higher concentrations, MIGHT create minor problems in those areas... And A/T fluid has too many unwanted additives and conditioners that compromise the pure lubricity most of us are looking for in an additive.

I use Power Service ONLY. Does the whole job and doesn't need the ashless 2 stroke oil in order to keep the combustion chamber clean from carbon build up. Saw an engine with the head off at 470k mi. and it was clean as a whistle. Owner said he used Power Service since the truck was new.

My 2 cents.

Stan

Do a search on Fuel additives after making sure you're sitting in a comfortable chair.

I don't know about oil but trans fluid will clean the injecters.
It works better than these so called additives. I use a quart
to a tank in my 24v about every 3 months.

Re:Add motor oil or tansmission fluid with every fill up?
I think you'll find through analysis, that today's motor oils contain much more dispersant/detergent additives than automatic transmission fluid does. ATF equals to a SAE 20 weight oil. 5W-20 motor oil is becoming increasingly popular for gassers. The thinner oils may mix better with diesel fuel.
If looking for increased lubricity, vegetable oil may be a cost effective alternative. I know Schaeffers' Oil makes a diesel additive called Soyshield for that purpose.

Re:Add motor oil or tansmission fluid with every fill up?
I have always run Stanadyne or Lubtech additives in my rigs. The use of "other" fluids in the fuels is great for the diesels made in the 1960's with mechancal injection and low fuel pressures, but todays systems DO NOT require such home remedies. With the VP44 pump being so delicate to begin with, I wouldn't chance using motor or ATF oil..
Just use diesel additives and you won't have to worry. With the Stanadyne/Lubtech stuff my 1989 truck had 265,000 miles on the original injectors, pump and lift pump...

Re:Add motor oil or tansmission fluid with every fill up?
About once a month I put a quart of ATF in when I fill, whatever is cheap at the fuel station. It helps keep the injectors clean as a whistel, I used to burn my used motor oil also, but those fuel filters are two expensive to change every three thousand miles. I have done that for years and my father has done it longer, never had a lick of trouble with pumps or injectors.

I did read that the additives in the ATF may, I said may, do damage to the VP44 pump due to the detergents and the vane pump inside the pump not agreeing with each other.
I dunno, I have seen guys with 300,000 miles and have done nothing to the truck other than drive it.. What ever tickles your fancy I guess..
