My New Cummins Did A Strange Thing Today
My new Dodge Ram with the 6.7 Cummins turbo diesel did a strange thing this afternoon. I stopped at a store for about 10-15 minutes and when I restarted the truck I noticed the sound of the engine was quite loud, something like the older diesels. As I gathered speed I noticed that the engine was very sluggish and would buck somewhat when I gave it more fuel. My first destination was only a couple of miles away so I decided to keep the truck running in case it wouldn’t start again. On the way the engine would barely reach 2000 RPM and felt like it would die at any moment. There was almost no power. Upon reaching my first destination I shut the engine down and decided to let it “rest” for a few minutes.
I held my breath as I started the engine back up and to my relief all was normal. I then proceeded to drive a few more miles to a market where I again shut the engine down. After spending about 20 minutes there I restarted the truck and it was still OK. (The engine has only 800 miles on it, by the way).
Now, here’s what I believe was NOT the problem: bad fuel or a clogged filter. My reasoning is that if this was the case restarting the vehicle wouldn’t fix the problem. A clue might lie in the fact that the engine was so loud when the problem occurred (that’s for you experts to figure out). I’m hoping some codes were thrown so that the dealer can locate the glitch. I certainly don’t want the problem to reappear when I’m towing my fiver in some out-of-the-way place.
Do any of you diesel experts have any idea what could have caused the problem? Thanks in advance...
Truck info: 2007 Ram 3500/6.7CTD/QC/4X4/6-speed man...everything stock.

Good Luck on the dealer finding any codes. This has also happened to mine and the dealer told me there were no codes, it has happened a couple of times and I have noticed that if I turn the ignition and start the truck without waiting a little bit that is when it happens. There are a few people on the forum that this has happened too.
mine's done it & it shows an APPS sensor voltage too low code, but always seems to go away, only happened a time or two, so no trips to the dealer for it yet?? also seems like mine done it if I just jumped in & started it w/out waiting for a few seconds??? maybe it'll get worked out eventually? Dusty
Thanks for the replies. My thoughts were "regen" also but I thought that when the regen process takes place the idle speed goes up and smoke is visible from the exhaust. Am I right with that assumption? It's kinda scary that others are having this problem, too and Dodge doesn't have an answer. Hopefully they will discover some common problem that will fix our machines. Other than that, I really love he truck.
Happened to a my step dad in his ford. I thought about it for a couple of hours. and figured that the waste gate got stuck open. All of the semtoms where there. NO POWER, LOTS OF NOISE, LOTS OF SMOKE. What sucked for him was he had a 13k5er so he had his foot to the floor and it would not go over 40mph. He shut it off and it never happened again.

I had the exact problem and the dealer fixed it. I did not throw any codes when it happened to me but this is what the tech wrote on the work order:
Performance check DTC-None found. No sel. No related TSB.
Flashed ECM to latest level the code P0192 became active. Relearned PIN/VEN/Milage-code still active.
606 WD94
736 flash TIPM to latest level. Now no codes. Software issue. Road tested 14 miles and ran perfect. Labeled hood.
Several people on this site has had the same problem. I guess it is some kind of soft ware problem.

Hasn't done it again so far...

Turbo Problems
Hello,
I am new here and am NOT a mechanic. Just a guy who loves Diesel trucks. I bought a new 2007 6.7L Dodge Mega Cab Larime. I DON'T tow anything except my fat butt all over town. It is just my primary "driving" vehicle. I have had my truck about 2 months and have about 5,500 miles on it. I have had horrible problems with the truck "shuttering" when I have been going 55-60 mph with the cruise on. Anyway, my check engine light came on and I went to the dealer and had some EGR thing they replaced for $550 (warranty). Then, the other day, the check engine light came on again and it was some code referencing the "turbo". Anyway, the dealer is putting a new turbo on and he said that Cummins says this should fix my "shuddering" down the road and the "chugging" and poor performance. The reason I am letting all of you know this, is that apparently, Cummins is very aware that they have a bad batch of turbos out there. Have your mechanic call Cummins and find out about the BAD TURBOS. Make sure the mechanic is very persistent, and Cummins is very particular about what they fix and want to know everything. I will get my turbo put on tommorrow and I hope it fixes it. This has been really bad. However, outside of these crazy two problems, I absolutely love this truck. It is GREAT!!! Hope this helps someone with the same problems I'm experiencing.

I'm going to wait until mine does it again before hitting the dealer up. I've got around 1300 miles now.
