6.7 started running real bad

I have around 1100 miles on my new truck. Today I was in town and pulled out of a shopping center parking lot and the truck fell on it's face. Started missing and had no power from a dead stop, also sounded really loud, like my old 7.3 PS. Just was choking along until it could wind up a little and then it would take off. Everytime I slowed down or stopped it just would sputter along with no power until it got going 25mph or so.
I limped along through town thinking that at any moment it was just going to die at the next light and leave me sitting there. Drove across town to the dealer and shut it off. They came out and it fired up with no problem. They took it into the shop put the computer to it, took it for a drive, etc. I was in the waiting room fealing like crap and the service guy comes out. "There is nothing wrong with it Steve". "We can't find any error codes and it drives great".

I thought he was messing with me at first but they really can't find anything wrong???? I had about a quarter tank of fuel in it, so it wasn't a bad tank of diesel. All I was told is if it happens again don't shut it off and bring it right back to them and leave it running so they can see whats up. The guy told me that maybe something reset itself, but they have no idea what it could be?

I drove it home and it's running fine now....go figure. My first Dodge after 3 PS's in a row, I'm thrilled.

Could that be it doing the self-cleaning burn for the DPF?? If they couldnt find anything wrong maybe thats what it was doing...

I never thought of that? If that's the case maybe I should have got out on the highway and ran it hard. Doesn't something flash on the overhead to tell you the DPF is getting plugged up though and regeneration is in progress?

Man I hope it was something simple. I'm scared to take it for a drive tomorrow for fear of getting stranded. Don't have much confidence in things just fixing themselves.

Yea hopefully thats all it was, Ive driven them but never when they go into regeneration; I do remember that they are supposed to only do it at highway speeds and that the overhead is supposed to say something, but as computer controlled as these are, I guess they can do it whenever the computer tells it to. Good luck, hopefully its nothin serious.

Well I went on a long trip today (sitting in a hotel while typing this). The truck is running great.

Must have been a computer glitch? When I shut it off it did a re-boot I guess. LOL

Hello, I am new to the Cummins world, Formerly PSD 7.3, Anyway I purchased my truck last Thursday and thismorning on my way to work I stopped for coffee and started the truck up and it was really loud like the older Cummins,Seemed to have power and oil pressure was fine so I drove it to work ( about 65 miles) when I exited the freeway it was choking itself seemed like it wanted to die, I krippled it to work and parked, turned it off then started it and drove around work and it seemed fine. That makes me a little uneasy.

Question

I also forgot to say that the truck only has 500 miles on it and when I bought it the ave mileage said 14.2 then went to 15.6 now it has dropped to 12.9, Should I be concerned or is this normal.

Yep, sounds like the same thing that happened to mine. I was in stop an go traffic so it really was choking after every stop. I think if I had gotten on the freeway it would have drove much better as it seemed that when it got reved up it stopped choking some.

On a postive note, after my long trip this weekend it seems fine. Drove hundreds of miles over two days with no problems. If it ever happens again while I'm in town I'll head right over to the dealer and have the cummins tech look at it before I shut if off. If it happens out of town I'm just going to stop and shut if off, seems like that reset the computer and stopped the problem.

Find it hard to believe with OBD II type software that I assume the new smog diesels must have, that it did not log a misfire code of some sort???

Took the truck to the dealer this morning and of course they said they could not find anything wrong. No codes no loud noise, nothing. I know it happened very early in the morning and I might have been a little sleepy but I know it happened. How is it that something just fixes itself ?????

Also, you are 100% positive that you put ULSD and didn't get some LSD snuck into the tank right? Just a thought...It doesn't seem to me that these trucks doing their regeneration process should put you in a limp like mode for ANY period of time. What if that happened when you were trying to pull 10k up an 8% grade?
