Another de-soot question

I just dropped off my 6.7 at the dealer's after receiving an engine maintance light.

The service writer told me that it would need to be de-sooted... And, it would take two to three days. Questions -

How often is this required?

Will an updated flash prevent this from happening in the future?

This is covered by warranty, isn't it? If it is covered what are options after warranty?

This is my first problem and I have 11,600 unloaded hi-way miles @ 17.4 mpg.

Mine desooted in a period of about 15 miles without going to the dealer. It doesn't take that long. They just probably don't have time to do it immediately....

What I really need to know is -- Will this de-soot problem continue for the life of the truck? Is it a warranty issue?

I had just finished a 1,100 mile, fast, trip. The service writer said the reason I had the problem was because I had been driving slow or it had not been started for a while -- Both answers, WRONG...

De-Soot

I noticed the CEL yesterday, and did the key trick. I got code P2262. From the info on this forum, I drove the truck for 50 minutes in 4th gear keeping the revs at 3000. Got home and restarted, and the CEL was out. Good to go. I live 4 hours from a dealer, so it would be a waste to drive that distance just to have them keep the truck for 2 days.

I just had mine in for a new computer and my DPF was 99% clean with 31,000 miles. I do however run the Fitch Fuel Catalyst and have noticed my that my mileage has gone from 16 mixed driving to 18.7 this last tank (calulated by GPS miles). A cleam DPF and better MPG...maybe it really works. That's the only thing I can figure as to the improvements.

Boaterman, I believe it will continue for the life of the truck unless Dodge comes out with a better system than the current EGR one on these trucks. That's the main problem. Try just unplugging the electrical connection to the EGR. I just did it this morning and the truck runs fine except for the EGR CEL....

I just got my truck from the shop, had the turbo and exhaust cleaned.

Something interesting, the service tech told me that the truck will not regen if you are running with cruise control.

Correct but if you really need a REGEN and you keep driving with the cruise control then you will probably continue to clog it up and end up with the "CAT FULL" message which requires a major desoot........

My has regened while in cruise - even when the Cat Full message was on the overhead. I took it to the highway, set cruise at 70 and in 8 miles in statred dropping - 80% 70% then System OK.

Finally got the truck back today. They cleaned the turbo and exhaust. The service Mgr. told me that this problem would continue until Dodge solved the problem... GM and Ford will have similar issues in 2010.

I got the latest flash AY.

Initially you may be hesitant to do the deletes but once you do it you will breathe a sigh of relief that you no longer have to worry about the exhaust clogging up....

I need lots of additional information on the process. Also, I really don't want to take any chances with warranty issues.

How do you handle inspection issues?

After the warranty expires I will be ready to get er done.

Well, that remains to be seen for me. Va does have emissions testing for diesels but I don't have to worry about it for two more years. Most guys are just planning on putting the stock stuff back on to pass emissions and then pulling it back off once they pass.
Warranty? We Don't Need No Stinkin Warranty!!!!!!
You will put your warranty in jeopardy by doing these deletes. For many of us it's worth it to take the risk. My mileage is way up since I did it and that will pay for the kit in a short time....

FLASH: Engine System And Exhaust Aftertreatment System Enhancements
tsb 18-013-08. Takes one hour to update pcm and ccn. Then a forced regeneration takes one hour usually about 45 mile drive at 55 mph to 60 mph. Don't forget to watch the video they give you.
News Flash yet another tsb I can't keep up with them any more. This bulletin involves verifying all TSB's related to high sooting issues have been properly
addressed, replacing both Oxygen (O2) Sensors, and wrapping the exhaust pipe in the
area of the FRONT O2 sensor.
This bulletin also involves verifying that the Documentation Kit has been installed in the
vehicle and the customer has been informed of its contents.
