I was talking to a mechanic today while getting my truck serviced and we got on the topic of aftermarket air cleaners, he said whatever you do dont get the K&N because they will dust the cylinders. I had already ruled out the idea of a K&N as I think theyre a joke anyway. My question is, what is the actual difference between the filter of a K&N and a S&B of AFE, there's no risk of dusting the cylinders with the S&B or AFE is there? That whole topic is totally foreign to me so I dont have a clue. I was planning on getting the S&B as I dont want to spend a huge amount on the AFE and am not planning on doing any ridiculous mods. Help?

 

I had an S&B and never had any trouble. I believe S&B amd AFE have 7 layer filters while the K&N has 4.

 

so do the S&B and AFE just have less oil on the filter? im told k&N are oiled filters, which cause the dusting...?

 

this is an old subject that K&N has resoved supposedly. They went to a thicker filter on the newer diesel aplications to filter better. The problem is that they have a tendancy to be over oiled and then the oil is pulled into the intake and you get oil on the vanes of the turbo. You are better off with a dry media filter.
AFE has a couple of dry washable filters for the 6.7. I have yet to clean mine and I have about 12K on it.

BTW, I really believe in the K&N,s on anything except diesels, I have them in all my quads,bikes and gas cars

On my 2006 i would pull the air cleaner duct off between the filter and turbo at every oil change (7500 miles). That made it easy to get the oil filter off and also check to see if any dust was getting past my K&N filter. I never found dust it there. TOM

 

I run a K&N on my 01 2500 for 6 yrs and never had any problems. Always checked for oil at the turbo inlet and there never was any oil. I personnally think that K&N is as good as any other, but lots of people don't like them.
Individual choice I guess.

 

I ran a K&N for 50,000 miles on my 94. Then I bought an AfE intake. I sold the truck at 100,000 miles, no problems, and the truck was on some really dusty logging roads its whole life.
My advice however, is stay with OEM and save your money. The only gain I could factor was more turbo noise from the after market filters.

 

My 01 with the K&N had much better throddle response over the stock one.

 

Will an AFE air cleaner void my warranty?

 

AFE Proguard 7 or S@B progressive 8 layer are your best aftermarket filtration options. Just follow the instructions on oiling and you're fine. I've thought at times that I "overoiled" my Proguard 7 and there was nothing in the intake tube...S@B progressive 8 layer is another highly efficient aftermarket option.

 

According to the Magnusen Moss act a company can't void the warranty from a diffenet make of filter unless it is proven that this filter caused the problem. Now a bankruptcy might be another issue all together

I have an S & B cold air intake system on my 08 and @ 80000.0 miles I have had no problems with it or warranty issues. I buy my replacement parts from Avondale dodge in AZ and they sell the air raid system for the dodge cummins

 

i would think that these engines beiing as tough as they come (even the turbos)
would be able to handle anything getting past even a very poor filter and simply burn whatever small debris sneeks through the filter and and remain uneffected..

 

Ingestion of dirt is more than just being able to burn it. Silicon doesn't "burn" per se in the engine and is then wiped down with the piston rings and ends up in the oil. This fine silicon will wear bearing surfaces and any contact surfaces over time at a much accelerated rate. Keeping the air clean is for the health of the oil.

 

Been runnign a K&N for 45k now and no problems at all - the tube from the filter to the turbo is clean. I check it every oil change and have never had any dust.
