6.7l REALLY THAT BAD?
"yeah, gas trucks are okay, lots of girls have them...even my daughter had one, but she got smart, and got a CTD"
Daily drive a 12V Only made it about 275k miles. Junk! Only had a head gasket, injectors, 2 turbos, 2 clutches, and an injection pump installed in the last 50k miles. All for 16.5 MPG in town and 19.5MPG on the interstate. Or 1 MPG intown better than my common rail motor with a reflash,a clutch, fuel pump, and a door seal gasket in the past 83k miles. I bought a 6.7 for the long haul and hate to tell ya this but the 04.5 is definitely the biggest pain of them all as far as the engine is concerned. The 08 gets the worst MPG empty but hey what do I expect from 4.44 gears. Maybe one of these days I will run the valves, that usually is worth 1.5 MPG in itself. Best bet is throw out these diesels and get an inline 6 gasser that put out 110 HP like big rigs ran for years. Still see them on the road from time to time. No emission problems or turbos to deal with. Progress is a beautiful thing

and you traded your 04.5 for a 08?
how bad is your 08 MPG, and what mods?
-what about the HVAC on the new trucks? my 06 HVAC has been bad since new, and now two blend doors are gone, and the ones left are broke and cracked, by the sound of things.
-how big are the 09/10's compared to a Mega? we LOVE our Mega, the back seat is JAM PACKED today (2 gym bags, 3 coats, 3 boxes to mail)
-will the 06 radio surround work in the 09 (in other words, can i transfer my in dash GPS unit to the new truck, and put the new trucks radio back in my 06) or will i have to leave my GPS investment in the dash of my 06 to trade it in?
-will the 06 bed cover fit? tonneau's are ~$900 or so. hate to lose it.
i hate to think of hate mods i have on my truck to lose.
Well I read a lot of these posts and I think I can boil it down to this.....
The 6.7 is laden with emissions garbage that you have to deal with. Any extra electronics are extra problems no matter how you slice it.
The new tranny is nicer.
The 5.9 has less to go wrong, and really when you guys say your 6.7 pulls better, you are saying your tranny is better. The engine is so similar in power it's not the engine that's making a difference. A $400 Smarty will bump a 5.9 to 425 HP and 850 TQ instantly.
The weak point of the 5.9 is the transmission, and the 48RE is actually a good transmission, just not as good as the 68RE.

I just sold my 08 6.7 I pulled a 48 foot inclosed and loved it i put about 30,000 miles on it and they had to clean the turbo once. I got around 9-11 mpg loaded when I drove it empty it would get 18-20 mpg I loved the truck but I dont pull that trailer any more so I sold it. I kept my 02 and I love that truck it always runs and pulls hard I get about the same mpg as the 6.7.
I would buy another 6.7 but there is just something about my 02 the way it sounds and the way it runs i dont think i will ever be able to sell it.

BTW, if the newer CTD's are so bad in your opinion maybe you should engineer a better engine that meets the current EPA standards.
whats the 51 block?

i can only give an opinion on what has been working for me.
buy a 2nd gen and get her rebuilt to your specs, then you will know what you have, with the advantage of a relatively simple truck to work on.
good body
tracker bar etc
cam by colt cams
clutch by south bend
rebuilt 5 speed
new turbo 4" exhaust
pac-brake
and i am privileged to say a 5.9 rebuilt by Piers Harry
and if you really want to go full out, get $$$ arb air lockers... [not yet for me]
anyway that is how i did it, and i'm very happy
edit, total cost is about half of a new 6.7

That is the price you pay for the add horse power. My 03 does not get the mileage that 99 gets that was the price for the extra horse power.

well to all that talks **** on the 6.7...take the emissions off i mean everything even the throttle blade egr do turbo back exhaust you wont have no probs i did mine at 5k i have had very minor probs the biggest prob was the throttle blade flappin shut under load and couldnt figure out what it was so did the delete bam fixed it and still running code free and also dont run a edge juice with attitude mine is completely un hooked except to moniter and turbo timer all it does is throw codes
hey guys, i am new on here. i have a 2008 dodge dually 4door 4x4 6 speed stick shift. i amd putting a 5in turbo back on it and was wanting to know what the best programmer was to get. i was looking at the h&s xrt but i also like the smarty what do yall think

This thread has me confused now. I have a 2001 2500 with CTD...and I love the vehicle. Unfortunately the wife (soon to be ex) has this vehicle. I have the chance to land a very good deal on a 2007 3500 SRW Quad Cab with a 6.7.
Sounds like it's a great truck. My real question on this issue is this: is it advisable to purchase a warranty/extended warranty with this vehicle? Are there tweaks and adjustments that will need to be made on this model that a warranty addresses? I see a lot of posters making comments about some relatively minor issues. But, I don't really understand exactly what's being said etc.
So, if you were going to buy a 2007 with a 6.7, would you get a warranty? Any recommended should or should not do's?
This forum/site is great. Look forward to more great reads.

It would all depend. I would sit down and have a good honest converstation with the dealer who will be doing the majority of the warranty work if something goes wrong.
When I bought my truck, I did this with my dealer and we agreed that any mods done that cause damage, would not be warrantied. They agreed that it would be hard to blame a programmer for a seat motor, or a/c compressor going out, and agreed to warranty such items. One faulty HVAC system and your extended warranty will pay dividends.
It will be hit or miss if you are traveling and something happens, but, that chance vs the benefits of the Smarty and deletes are well worth the gamble.

Thanks for the advice. Apparently you have 30 days from purchase to get an extended warranty executed. I may take advantage of that time to research this more fully.
As for the Smarty and deletes....I've always been a proponent of leaving a vehicle 100% stock, well, with a powerplant like the Cummins that's been my philosophy. Never failed me on the 01 truck. However, it sounds like these Smarty/Deletes are the way to go.
I'm now in the Army as an Armor guy. In my previous life I was in the Navy fixing jet engines. I feel confident around jets but not too nifty around automobiles. Is this Smarty issue something a novice can accomplish? The past two days I've been looking at the site to get more info on the Smarty and I'm not too sure just yet.
Thanks again.
