Where's my power going??

Howdy everyone! I'm new here and to the diesel world. my grandpa had diesel dumptrucks and tractors, so I know the basics about diesel motors, but not anything about the cummins.

I have a new-to-me '06 2500 2wd w/180K. I've only put about 10k on it, and I have noticed some quirks. For now, I'll stick to what I feel is the most important. I pay real close attention to every sound and noise that happens cuz I'm trying to learn my truck. it seems that lately, I don't feel the Turbo kicking in as well as other times. I pretty much drive the same every wear I go- unloaded and a mix of city/ highway. The last couple of weeks, the truck has been Great! excellent acceleration and drive-ability. But this afternoon (and on a few other occasions) I feel like I can't get the turbo to kick in hardly at all. It drives okay, but almost as if it is straining against itself...

Is there a quirk or issue I should start with?

Thanks for any info ya'll have. It took me 5 years to get this truck, and I plan on having it 10 - 15 more.

I'm with kitterman on this...change out your air & fuel filter, and maybe run routine maintenance. Second get some gauges this will help alot down the road to diagnosing problems and being able to watch your truck. Trans temp, EGT, boost would be a good place to start.

Also maybe pull the hose off the front of the turbo and check for any play in the shaft...could be that your ready for a new turbo. But start with the basics then work your way to other items.

Welcome to DTR!

Thanks for the ideas. i forgot to mention that I had the oil and fuel filter changed when i first bought it, and i have been changing fuel and oil filters at 5000 miles just to be on the safe side. The Air filter only has about 10k on it. I'll check the shaft on the turbo this evening! Thanks!!!

Is the truck blowing alot of black smoke?? If so you might have a leak in a boost hose. If your not belching black smoke (from lack of boost) then your not getting enough fuel. You might try swapping out the fuel filter again with a new one, thier cheap and sometimes (but not common) a new filter can be defective. Could be a lift pump going south..... OR you could just be getting use to the power you have...

I have noticed that since I changed the Fuel filter, I cannot seem to get any black smoke-- even when I floor it. That was my first concern, but i thought she was just running real clean.... it's hard to describe what it feels like. Kinda like she's clawing with the front feet, but dragging the back feet....if that makes any sense.

pull your air intake tube to the filter and check the play in your turbo shaft. you should have very little in/out play but if you have any up/down play this could be an issue that is causing your problem.
