When I drop tranny pan....?

My Geno's tranny filter kit should arrive this afternoon. Anyway, is there any way to drop the pan without spilling the fluid everywhere? Like if I just take out some of the bolts and drop it some on one side but I thought that might bend it some. Any tips? When I refill It should take 6 qts. right?

Only way I have avoided making another mess changing the fluid is to take it somewhere and pay them.

Been thinking about having a drain plug put in though.

I park truck uphill a little, break the bolts lose all the way around, then open up one corner in the back. Loosen away from that corner until you get some fluid- I'll gently pry that corner down a little. You'll still have the balancing act going down to the drip pan.

You can get a siphon kit and go down the dipstick tube.

Install a drain while you have it open and only have a mess this one time, but with anything you do, there's always going to be some kind of fluid dripping and running out when dropping a tranny pan.

I did it as described above, loosen one side more than the other... allowing some fluid to drain.... then once the pan has some space, return it to level and slowly drop the pan level and then into a collector..

I did it with only minor spillage... I then installed a drain plug and my subsequent fluid changes are a breeze.

Once I had a coupon for a drain and fill for an 80's camaro I had. The tech has the lift and the tools and still dumped the hot fluid down the front of him. I laughed and told him that that was worth the money to see that.

Now, that's funny. And to those that have, or are getting a bigger pan w/ a drain plug, make sure you weld a small nut to the plug itself. I broke off an allen wrench trying to get mine loose . Thank god it had a port for a sending unit.

Take all the bolts out but one. Loosen that one and let the pan angle down slowly. When it is done draining, take the last bolt out and slowly lower the pan and empty what is left in the pan.

Dropping the tranny pan stinks....LOL Sometimes everything goes as planned and other times it is a disaster.... I have splattered a few all over me a couple of times.

I GENTLY put a jack under the tranny pan with a peice of wood on it. Loosen all the bolts and have someone like a buddy, girlfriend, wife...whoever lower the jack while I balance the pan. Then it at least gets lowered straight down and in the event it spills Im still out of the oils path. Although last time I took an 3/16" drill bit and poked a hole in the corner of the pan and let it drain that way, then I put my PML pan on with a drain plug. Have a drip pan ready when you loosen the filter, theres more oil to come. But no matter how hard you try you're going to get oil all over. This is how I avoided an excessive mess...
